Subaru shares these two Awards with the BRZ’s near-identical sister, the Toyota GT86, and its chief engineer Tetsuya Tada.

Jury panel member Peter Cambridge, a respected performance car dynamicist, welcomed the Subaru BRZ and GT86 as “the new generation of affordable rear-wheel-drive coupes”.

Graham Heeps, Editor of Vehicle Dynamics International, commented: “For some time now we’ve been beating the drum for simplicity. Cars that take a less-is-more approach and offer fun at legal speeds have been thin on the ground.”

Having already secured widespread media acclaim for its engaging handling, winning the Vehicle Dynamics International Car of the Year Award is further confirmation that the BRZ has met Subaru’s objective of delivering ‘Pure Handling Delight’. The BRZ accomplishes this thanks to its light weight, low centre of gravity, front engine/rear-wheel-drive chassis balance, short wheelbase, and free-revving 2.0 litre Boxer engine.

The BRZ has already been acclaimed for delivering a thoroughbred driving experience, thanks to its light weight, low centre of gravity, superb rear-wheel-drive chassis balance, and high-revving 2.0 litre Boxer engine. With on-the-road prices confirmed at just £24,995 to £27,995, it will also offer great value for money.

Giving customers a good choice in interior equipment and trim levels, the Subaru BRZ will be offered from launch in two model variants: 2.0i SE, and 2.0i SE Lux with a choice of a six-speed manual or, for £1,500 more, a six-speed automatic with paddle shift operation. A more basic S model is anticipated for launch in 2013.

Both the SE and SE Lux will come equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, a sophisticated torque-sensing limited slip differential and fully automatic air conditioning with dual-zone controls.

The SE and SE Lux also feature electrically-folding door mirrors with heaters; keyless Smart Entry with push-button engine start; leather-trimmed steering wheel, parking brake and gearshift lever; and a high-quality six-speaker audio system with CD, radio and iPod connectivity. In addition to all these features, the SE Lux also has heated leather seats.

There are just two optional extras: Pioneer satellite navigation (£1,000) and special paint finishes (£500).

Six bodywork colours will be available: Satin White Pearl, Sterling Silver Metallic, Dark Grey Metallic, Crystal Black Silica, San Remo Red, and WR Blue Mica.

To further enhance the ownership experience, all Subaru BRZ buyers will be entitled to Subaru’s unique Everything Taken Care of (ETCo) aftercare package, the most comprehensive in the UK.

At no additional cost, Subaru ETCo covers minor dent and scratch repairs, alloy wheel repairs, monthly wash, annual valet, lost keys replacement, service collection and delivery, annual wheel alignment check, first MOT cover, and winter wheel and tyre storage, as well as providing an accident management service and a contribution to insurance cover excess. Subaru ETCo is offered in addition to Subaru’s three-year / 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty.

Marketing Director of Subaru UK, Kenyon Neads, commented: “There is huge interest in the Subaru BRZ, heightened by very positive press reviews of the car so far. Early demand is strong so we fully expect that some early customers will have to wait some months for delivery, especially during 2012, but we have no doubt they will agree it will be worth the wait.”

<![CDATA[CEREMONY MARKS START OF SUBARU BRZ PRODUCTION]]> A special ceremony held today at Subaru’s Gunma factory in Ota-city, Japan, marked the start of production of one of this year’s most anticipated new models, the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT 86.

The landmark event in the collaborative agreement between Subaru’s parent company Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd (FHI) and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) was attended by the presidents of both corporations.

Subaru’s Gunma Main Plant, which will produce both the Subaru and Toyota versions, has undergone a significant re-fitting to cope with the extra capacity. Subaru plans to produce the Impreza at the same plant by March 2013.

FHI President Yasuyuki Yoshinaga commented: “This car symbolises our corporate strategy in two significant aspects: good progress in our alliance and advancement of our ‘select and focus’ approach. The start of production today made a huge step for us, but it is not our end goal. By constantly refining both models, FHI and TMC hope to nourish each model to be loved by customers all over the world for a long time to come.”

TMC President Akio Toyoda said: “The Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 could not have been successfully developed without collaboration between FHI and TMC. We started the alliance for mutual growth in 2005. Now I’m delighted to see that our alliance bore fruit.”

<![CDATA[SUBARU UK ENJOYS EARLY 2012 SALES SUCCESS]]> Subaru is enjoying a great start to 2012 with sales up 86.6 per cent during February when compared with 2011.

Subaru’s all new XV compact crossover, which reached the dealers at the start of February has proved an instant hit, with the company’s 60 strong dealer network reporting high levels of interest in the new model. The February rise follows a 24 per cent climb in sales during January.

Every XV is equipped with two core Subaru technologies – Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and a Boxer engine – ensuring that this new vehicle feels both engaging and incredibly safe to drive, in all conditions. Official results show the XV to be the safest car in its segment with a five-star EuroNCAP rating and the highest child protection score of any car in the UK.

XV combines style and functionality with generous levels of standard-fit equipment, making it more than a match for its established compact crossover rivals. Priced from £21,295, the 11-model XV range offers three equipment levels – S, SE and SE Lux Premium – a choice of 114ps 1.6 and 150ps 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.0-litre diesel engine that produces 147ps and 350Nm, with five and six-speed manual or a six-speed CVT automatic transmission, depending on model.

Most comprehensive aftercare package in UK

Also aiding Subaru’s uplift in sales is the carmaker’s new three-year Subaru ETCo programme, the most comprehensive three-year aftercare package currently on offer to motorists in the UK, offering a host of potential benefits worth over £7,000, free-of-charge.

Subaru ETCo comprises 11 different elements, all designed to make running and owning a new Subaru easier and more beneficial than ever before. The comprehensive package includes minor dent and scratch repairs, alloy wheel repairs, monthly wash ‘n’ vac, lost key replacement, and service collection and delivery.

“These encouraging early sales results for the Subaru XV confirm that the latest addition to our product line-up is set to establish itself as one of the most capable and best-value-for-money compact crossovers currently available,” comments Kenyon Neads, Marketing Director at Subaru UK. “The XV’s early popularity and the introduction of our unrivalled Subaru ETCo aftercare package give us tremendous confidence that 2012 is going to be a good year for our brand, our dealers and our customers,” adds Neads.

Eagerly awaited 2+2 coupe

On sale in the UK this summer, Subaru’s sensational all-new BRZ 2+2 coupe is expected to bring more good news. Designed as a pure driver’s car and powered by a 200ps 2.0-litre Boxer engine in a lightweight, rear-wheel drive chassis, the BRZ has already generated significant levels of interest at dealerships, with customers registering their details even before pricing has been confirmed.

<![CDATA[UK BRZ SPECIFICATION IS REVEALED]]> - Subaru confirms generous kit for BRZ

- Three trim levels will suit all tastes

- New BRZ to be backed by market leading ETCo aftercare

Designed to deliver powerful performance and thrilling handling, the UK-specification Subaru BRZ is set to add generous standard equipment to its already impressive arsenal.

Subaru’s stunning new 2+2 coupe has already generated high levels of interest at dealerships, with many customers placing orders before pricing and standard equipment have been announced.

The Japanese brand has now revealed that top-specification models come with 17-inch alloy wheels, a torque-sensing LSD, front, side, curtain and knee airbags, MP3 connectivity, dual-zone climate control and LED daytime running lights. The driver-focussed BRZ will also come with Subaru’s VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control) and can be fitted with either a six-speed short-shift manual or paddle-operated automatic transmission.

A second, lower-spec model will also be made available a little later in the year, as will a third ‘stripped out' version, which promises to be the perfect solution for those who wish to tune and fettle the BRZ to their own tastes, as well as track-day enthusiasts.

The BRZ is available in six eye-catching colours all of which suit the car perfectly, including Subaru’s trademark WR Blue Mica, Sterling Silver, Satin White, Crystal Black Silica, Dark Grey Metallic and San Remo Red.

The carefully conceived powertrain packaging allows Subaru’s celebrated horizontally-opposed 200PS 2.0-litre Boxer engine to be positioned lower than ever before. The 2+2 coupe has the lowest centre of gravity of almost any vehicle, with half the BRZ’s mass sitting below knee height. It promises a power-to-weight ratio of 164PS per tonne and this, in conjunction with its advanced lightweight chassis and use of cutting-edge lightweight materials, endows the BRZ with exceptional handling characteristics.

ETC for extra peace of mind

As with all new Subarus, the BRZ will be available with the brand’s new three-year Everything Taken Care of (ETCo) aftercare package, which offers a host of potential benefits worth over £7,000, free-of-charge.

Subaru ETCo comprises 11 different elements, all designed to make running and owning a new Subaru easier and more beneficial than ever, not to mention the cost benefits with each of the services provided free of charge. Subaru ETCo’s comprehensive package includes:

  • Minor dent and scratch repairs
  • Alloy wheel repairs
  • Monthly wash ‘n’ vac
  • Annual makeover – full valet
  • Lost keys replacement
  • Service collection and delivery
  • Annual wheel alignment check

<![CDATA[SUBARU BRZ AND NEW IMPREZA MAKE EUROPEAN DEBUT AT 2012 GENEVA MOTOR SHOW]]> Japanese manufacturer, Subaru, will exhibit the hotly-anticipated Subaru BRZ and Impreza five-door at the forthcoming 82nd Geneva International Motor Show (8 to 18 March), marking the European debut for both models.

The 200PS Subaru BRZ – developed as a joint-project between Subaru and Toyota – is a sports car designed to offer maximum driver engagement. Featuring a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, and powered by Subaru’s trademark horizontally-opposed 2.0-litre Boxer engine, this exciting model will deliver impressive levels of grip and handling thanks to the lowest centre of gravity of any production car.

The fourth-generation all-new Impreza, which will also be on display at the Swiss expo, has been designed to offer high levels of refinement and value. The C-segment model will provide superior reliability, handling and safety features, with Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system and horizontally-opposed Boxer engine at its core.

In addition, Subaru will also be celebrating the 40th Anniversary of its unique Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive platform at this year’s Geneva show. The technology was first introduced on the Leone estate in 1972 and Subaru’s stand will showcase a number of products from four decades of All-Wheel Drive, including the history of Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive, a distinct new logo and a 3D virtual game.

<![CDATA[£30,000 SUBARU OUTBACK WON IN NATIONAL CHARITY PRIZE DRAW]]> Following last year’s hugely successful National Cycle Relay – which raised nearly £40,000 for victims of the Japanese tsunami – Subaru UK has given away the Outback support vehicle which accompanied the riders throughout the lung-bursting 3,500-mile charity ride.

The winner, Heather Records of Wantage, Oxfordshire, is now the proud owner of the Outback 2.5 SE Lineartronic, worth £28,075. She, along with thousands of others, entered the prize draw by either visiting a Subaru dealer and buying a ticket or by texting in their answer to a simple question featured on the side of the car.

Mrs Records was delighted with her new car, saying: “I’ve been a Subaru owner for six years and my current car has been the very model of a family vehicle. It’s taken us on holidays, helped me move house and swallowed all sorts of sports equipment. The Outback looks to be even more practical and I’m very excited to have won.”

Marketing Director of Subaru UK, Kenyon Neads, added: “It was a grueling 11-week charitable mission covering 3,500 miles over 60 legs, and involving 59 Subaru dealers from Inverness to Cornwall. But the end results made all the effort worthwhile.

“The dealership staff who participated in the relay benefited greatly from the Outback support vehicle, which performed faultlessly in all weathers carrying spare parts, supplies and technicians,” added Neads. “It’s satisfying to know that the car will now go to a good home, and hopefully this is the start of a long-term relationship between Mrs Records and Subaru.”

All of the money raised went to Subaru UK’s charity partner, AAR Japan (Association for Aid Relief). They are utilising it to help fund mobile clinic services which provide paramedics, nurses and medical supplies to people displaced by last year’s earthquake.

Subaru UK’s fund raising comes in addition to the 50million yen donated by Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries. The company also provided 200 industrial products including generators, light towers and water pumps as part of its donation.

<![CDATA[SUBARU FORESTER NAMED JUNIOR CROSSOVER OF THE YEAR]]> The recently refreshed 2011 Subaru Forester has been named 'Junior Crossover of the Year' by specialist off-roading magazine, Total 4x4.

The go-anywhere, family friendly Forester, which is now available with a choice of extensively revised petrol and diesel Boxer engines, faced competition from the likes of a Toyota Urban Cruiser, Suzuki SX4 and Skoda Octavia Scout. However, thanks to its sure-footed Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive configuration, car-like driving dynamics and exceptional practicality, judges singled-out the Japanese crossover for the highest praise.

The panel of experts at Total 4x4 magazine said of the Forester:

"Typically of Subaru, the Forester does very good things without making a fuss of it. The combination it offers of quality, value, practical usability and driving talent makes it very hard indeed to beat. The Forester has always been a star in its own corner of the market, and heavily revised petrol and diesel engines means it now shines brighter than ever."

The 2.0-litre Boxer diesel Forester range, which returns an impressive 47.9 mpg combined, starts at £23,070 (on-the-road) for the entry-level 2.0D X, rising to £25,070 for the 2.0D XC, and £29,070 for the range-topping 2.0D XS NavPlus.

Customers preferring petrol power have a choice of two models – the Forester 2.0X and 2.0XS, costing £21,370 and £25,370 respectively in manual guise. Automatic versions are available at a £1,000 premium.

<![CDATA[SUBARU XV SECURES FIVE-STAR EURO NCAP RATING]]> The new Subaru XV has been awarded the maximum five-star safety rating in the latest round of Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) safety performance tests.

The latest crossover vehicle from the Japanese All-Wheel-Drive specialists scored particularly highly in the occupant protection category and was praised for its full complement of safety equipment.

Euro NCAP’s safety performance test – the industry standard across the continent and one of the most rigorous programmes in the world – has previously awarded the Subaru Impreza and Legacy/Outback with the five-star safety rating, but Subaru has further enhanced occupant safety in its latest model.

The XV benefits from Subaru’s symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) system, as well as the introduction of an advanced impact energy relay structure, ensuring the driver and passengers are well-protected in the event of a collision. This modern design makes use of high-tensile steel to improve safety and reduce weight throughout the car.

Dual front and side airbags are also installed as standard, with driver’s knee, curtain and torso airbags ensuring the car scored maximum points for side protection. VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control – Subaru’s version of ESP), which provides greater stability through the use of sensors throughout the AWD system, is also provided as standard across the XV model range.

‘Whilst we anticipated such a result for our XV crossover, this further underpins the vehicle’s credentials as an all-rounder, and one that will appeal to young families in particular’, said Kenyon Neads, Marketing Director, Subaru (UK) Ltd.

Euro NCAP provides car manufacturers and motorists with an independent safety assessment through its international test programme, and evaluates protection for adult and child occupants, pedestrian protection and safety equipment. Full test results are available at www.euroncap.com.

<![CDATA[SUBARU BRZ MAKES WORLD DEBUT AT TOKYO MOTOR SHOW]]> Register Your Interest

Subaru today unveiled the production version of its highly anticipated BRZ sports coupe. With 200PS and 151lb/ft maximum torque in a car weighing just 1,220kg, the BRZ has been designed for maximum – and accessible - driving enjoyment.

The result of a Subaru-led joint-engineering venture with Toyota, the BRZ delivers a sensational and engaging driving experience, thanks in large part to an engineering and development programme that focused on achieving the lowest possible centre of gravity.

Concept

The Subaru BRZ was designed and developed from the outset to deliver driving fun and exceptional handling, combined with reliability and safety.

Carefully conceived powertrain packaging allows the celebrated horizontally-opposed Boxer engine to be positioned lower than ever before. This, in conjunction with its advanced lightweight chassis and use of cutting-edge lightweight materials, endows the BRZ with exceptional handling characteristics.

The low-slung, naturally aspirated engine allows for a low and wide stance: 1,300mm tall and 1,775mm wide. However, the 2+2 sports car still offers ample luggage space, ensuring it is adept as a weekend touring companion and as an enthralling daily driver.

Exterior styling

The BRZ’s styling – instantly recognisable as a Subaru – conveys the car’s fun-to-drive attitude.

At the front, the low-slung engine facilitates a low, purposeful bonnet line, which in turn accentuates the bulging front wheel arches. Signature design features – such as the six-star badge, distinctive headlights and hexagonal lower grille – give the BRZ a fresh, striking appearance.

The clean flanks of the BRZ are punctured by neat air vents either side, pierced by a chrome dart. A visually striking diffuser dominates the lower edge of the BRZ’s tail, with twin exhaust pipes prominently penetrating on each side, representing a final flourish of stylish functionality that conveys the performance intentions of Subaru’s newest model.

Interior

The interior of the BRZ is designed to ensure that the driver enjoys the behind-the-wheel experience to the full. The steering wheel is deliberately compact to aid rapid inputs and to ensure the driver can fully enjoy the BRZ’s lightning-quick responses.

The instrument binnacle features a tachometer with a digitally displayed speedometer at its centre, ensuring that the time required to view vital information is kept to an absolute minimum, and that time concentrating on the road is maximised.

The BRZ’s specially designed sports seats feature ergonomically optimised bolsters to hold the driver and passenger securely and comfortably.

Powertrain

Fully exploiting the best design features of the current-generation Boxer engine, the newly developed 2.0-litre powerplant is exclusive to the BRZ. The joint development programme with Toyota Motor Corporation allowed Toyota’s ‘D-4S’ direct injection and port injection technology to be incorporated into the BRZ’s power unit, improving efficiency. The powerplant achieves a maximum output of 200PS and 151lb/ft torque.

The transmission was engineered for exceptional gearshift feel and response. The six-speed manual features a short-stroke gear lever, which is optimized in rigidity, shift accuracy and weight. The six-speed automatic transmission has a ‘Sports’ mode for immediate shift response. Its ‘Manual’ mode allows the driver to use the steering wheel-mounted paddles and features a downshift ‘throttle blipping’ system to ensure the BRZ delivers maximum driver satisfaction.

Chassis and body

BRZ boasts a lightweight yet highly rigid body, developed to maximise the advantages of the car’s low centre of gravity. The rigid and durable chassis structure employs the latest lightweight, high-tensile steel technology, and helps the car’s driving characteristics while also enhancing occupant safety. The aluminium bonnet helps to minimise the BRZ’s weight, while the structure is also designed to maximise pedestrian protection.

The front suspension employs struts for optimum rigidity, while a double wishbone layout at the rear provides superb shock absorption and compliance. The 215/45 R17 tyres are mounted on lightweight and highly rigid 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels.

All BRZ variants are equipped with electronic stability control to ensure that driving pleasure and safety are delivered hand-in-hand.

The Subaru BRZ is scheduled to go on sale in the UK in July 2012.

The BRZ Concept has made its world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto show as a pre-cursor to the eagerly awaited Subaru BRZ which makes it full production debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in December.

Built around Subaru’s core technologies, the BRZ will use a new 2.0 litre Subaru Boxer engine developed specifically for the model and with the latest direct injection technology to improve combustion and efficiency.

The Subaru engineered chassis is built with front engine and rear wheel drive configuration, allowing the engine to sit low and rearward to ensure lowest possible centre of gravity and to maximise the BRZ’s handling prowess.

The new compact coupe has been developed as part of an on-going joint project with Toyota Motor Corporation. All cars will be built at Subaru’s Gunma plant in Japan when production starts in spring 2012.

<![CDATA[SUBARU NATIONAL CYCLE RELAY RAISES OVER £20,000 SO FAR FOR JAPAN EARTHQUAKE APPEAL]]> It’s been a gruelling 11-week charitable mission covering over 3,500 miles in 60 legs, and involving 59 Subaru dealers from Inverness to Cornwall. But on 21 October the Subaru UK National Cycle Relay reached its successful conclusion, having raised over £20,000 so far for people affected by the Japanese tsunami.

Starting from the Midlands back in August, the challenge involved the entire Subaru UK dealer network and took in all four corners of the British Isles. Employees at each dealership volunteered to cycle a leg between their showroom and the next site in the relay, with distances varying from 15 to a lung-bursting 130 miles.

Customers showed their generosity by digging deep with sponsorship donations for the cyclists taking part. Some even took to the saddle and rode a leg of the relay themselves. People like long-time Carstins Subaru patron, Stuart Birch from Loxley, Warwickshire, who cycled 46 miles.

As you’d expect on such a long and arduous cycling trip involving so many participants, there were stories both of success and woe, of triumph and tears. Take Aberdeenshire Subaru dealership, Lawrence of Kemnay, for example. Brand Manager, Scott Taylor, hit an incredible 52mph while riding a downhill section of his relay leg. Warwickshire-based Unity Subaru’s Matthew Callow had a more torrid time of it, however, catching his wheel on a disused rail track and losing his saddle in the ensuing crash with many miles still to ride.

Lord Edmiston, the chairman of I.M. Group (distributors of Subaru vehicles in the UK), said: “The Cycle Relay has been a huge success. We wanted to achieve two things with our fund raising efforts; to identify a specific project in Japan that we could support and where there would be real, tangible benefits and secondly, to involve as many of our dealers as possible. I’m delighted that the vast majority got involved with the project and did their bit for this worthwhile cause.”

The fundraising is set to continue until the middle of December, with prize-draw tickets taking over from charitable cyclists in a bid to bring in the cash. Showroom visitors can purchase tickets to enter the draw to win an Outback 2.5 SE Lineartronic worth £28,075. Up for grabs is a new version of the vehicle which acted as a support car throughout the relay, carrying spare cycles and bike parts for participating cyclists.

All donations raised are going to AAR Japan (Association for Aid Relief) where they will pay for mobile clinic services which provide paramedics, nurses and medical supplies to those displaced by the earthquake. People can also donate via Text Giving. All you have to do is send a text message to 70070, entering AARJ11 and the amount you wish to donate.

Subaru UK’s fund raising comes in addition to the 50 million yen (£415,000) donated by Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, in March. The company also provided 200 industrial products including generators, light towers and water pumps as part of its donation.

<![CDATA[Subaru launches new XV at Frankfurt Motor Show]]> Register Your Interest

Today (13th September) saw the world premiere of the new Subaru XV (European specifications) at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show

The launch of the XV takes Subaru into the compact crossover segment for the first time, where combining style with functionality is key. In this highly competitive segment, the XV will offer something different, and will bring a new level of engineering excellence.

In the XV, Subaru has achieved its aim of providing a stylish and distinctive crossover with trademark Subaru driving dynamics, but combined with high level of functionality and fuel efficiency.

Packaging

The XV's interior provides:

A spacious and roomy passenger compartment

A cargo area that is both spacious and convenient to use

Door opening dimensions which have been enlarged and a seating position which allows much easier ingress and egress.

Ample storage space for small objects provided at ideal locations

Large Multi-Function Display (MFD) which is highly visible in the upper middle section of the instrument panel for comfortable driving.

Exterior design

The XV is a new type of crossover design that combines a stylish, dynamic form with a high body and side cladding to enhance the sense of functionality associated with an SUV.

Equipped with a hexagonal grille and hawk eye headlights, these design features emphasize the unique identity of the newest Subaru cars, while the striking and innovatively designed alloy wheels and cut-away cladding give the XV its sporting appearance.

The corners of the front and rear bumpers were designed with special edges that enhance the aerodynamic performance of the vehicle and also contribute to better fuel efficiency.

Interior design

Subaru's designers worked hard on the XV's interior to bring out the best qualities of the chosen materials and to give passengers a feeling of quality as well as spaciousness.

Specifically:

• An upmarket interior was created by balancing and combining the different tactile and emotional qualities of leather, metal, and cloth.

• The Multi-Function Display is highly visible in the upper middle section of the instrument panel and provides the driver and passengers with all the necessary information in a highly intuitive format. Higher specification models will get a large 4.3 inch full-colour screen equipped with advanced infotainment such as eco-driving display and vehicle information display

Engines and transmissions

The new, 3rd generation Subaru Boxer engine, introduced this year with a totally new design, is installed in 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre petrol models. Along with the usual merits that horizontally-opposed engines inherently possess, this engine has improved fuel efficiency and exhaust performance. Together with the adoption of the new Lineartronic (CVT), a newly developed 'Auto Start System', the fuel efficiency was further improved.

A heavily revised version of Subaru's Boxer Diesel, which was specially developed for the European market, is also featured in the XV line-up.

Making use of the inherent advantages of Chain-driven CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) such as lightness, compactness, superior fuel efficiency and wide ratio coverage, Subaru successfully developed a new CVT for the XV for improved environmental friendliness and drivability.

Fuel efficiency will be further improved through Subaru's advanced new stop-start system which features a newly developed 'change of mind control' function to enable smooth restart within only 0.2 seconds of stopping.

Safety

A number of key features will take the XV to top of the class for safety.

By integrating the partition windows into the front doors and positioning the door mirrors on the door panels, class-leading forward visibility was achieved, and blind spots reduced. A stylish profile with a more streamlined rear roof edge was designed without impairing the rear field of view.

In addition to SRS driver's/passenger's airbags, SRS side airbags and SRS curtain airbags, SRS driver's knee airbag are installed as standard in all models.

VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) is installed in all models as standard. Its 'intervention timing' has been optimized while a brake assist function is also incorporated into the VDC system

<![CDATA[THE SUBARU LEGACY - 'NOT A CAR FOR WEAK-HANDSHAKE PEOPLE', ELITE MAGAZINE]]> The luxury lifestyle magazine, 'Elite', gave the Legacy a glowing review in their July/August edition:

"To describe the new Subaru Legacy as almost avant garde might raise a few eyebrows amongst the traditionalists. After all Subaru are renown more for outrageous performance allied to affordability rather than mold breaking aesthetics. But be prepared for the Zeitgeist aesthetics of this Subaru and as you dig a little deeper the surprises will accumulate. This is the new face of Subaru and not only is it appreciatively more handsome than its predecessors it has continued the technological advances as well to make it even more of a true driver’s car than ever. ‘What larks!’ What larks indeed await in store (with apologies to Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations...).

Retaining the legendary flat-four engine harnessed to a classic and practical four-wheel drive transmission means the new Legacy is as ever highly practical unlike the majority of eye-candy only estates on the market from the major players.

The new Legacy is longer, wider, taller, bigger in every way than the old one, and as a consequence it gains more gravitas, making much more of a statement with no apology for its extra bulk. Despite its increased size the chic styling ensures that it looks svelte and uber cool. Although large as it is parking the Legacy is no more difficult than a normal mid-sized saloon so getting that cherished antique table home undamaged will present no problems.

The traditional market for Legacy sales has been for farmers and land owners but the new target for Subaru is now perhaps a younger profile and city dwellers with an eye for a highly practical 4x4 that has the comfort and driving refinement they seek. There is also the kudos of buying into the Subarus complete with its blue-chip reputation for longevity and reliability. The new Legacy price range goes from £21,995 for the 2.0 litre iES Nav model up to £29,375 for the extremely powerful 2.5 litre SE Nav Plus flagship. Not bargain bucket prices but honest good value."

<![CDATA[WHAT CAR? MAGAZINE AWARD WRX STI A PLACE IN THEIR TOP 'FUN 50']]> Sitting at the more cost effective lower end of What Car's £30,000 to £55,000 category, the WRX STI had some fierce competition from the likes of Porsche, BMW and Lotus. Still, the nation's love of the WRX STI is evident as you can see from What Car's review:

"Iconic status doesn't come easy, but over the years the Subaru WRX has earned it. Not just through the amazing reputation Subaru carved out on the rallying circuit, but also by producing road-going cars that inspire awe."

"This latest, the WRX STI, continues the tradition. The immense traction from its [all]-wheel-drive system is matched by huge levels of grip, so the car clings to the road in all conditions. The Impreza has a more forgiving ride than rivals such as the Mitsubishi Evo, too."

"The engine is the real star of the show, though. Sure, it might be a little gutless at low revs, but work it hard and the acceleration it delivers is electrifying. The noise it makes - a delicious throaty burble - means it also has loads of character."

<![CDATA[COSWORTH IMPREZA STI CS400 SLAYS SUPERCARS AT CHOLMONDELEY PAGEANT OF POWER]]> In the hands of former British Rally Champion, Mark Higgins, Subaru’s limited-edition Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 put on an electrifying display at last weekend’s Cholmondeley Pageant of Power (15-17 July 2011; www.cpop.co.uk).

The All-Wheel Drive 400PS Subaru outpaced a host of high-performance road cars and supercars, including the Nissan GTR, Ariel V8 Atom, Lexus LFA and Ford Focus RS500, and in the final standings was beaten only by the £186,000 Lamborghini LP570-4 Performante on the 1.2-mile sprint circuit.

Significantly, on the final day of the event (Sunday 17 July) when the circuit was consistently soaked with rain, the Subaru comfortably outpaced every other participating vehicle. With a quickest time of 68.18 seconds, it was over four seconds quicker than the second placed Lancia Delta Intergrale WRC and six seconds quicker than the second placed car in the Supercar category.

Higgins’ high-speed run dramatically showcased the all-conditions attributes of the Cosworth-fettled Subaru, establishing it as the fastest hot-hatch in the ‘supercar’ class. Mark recorded a best time of 66.08 seconds, at an average speed of 65.45 mph on the twisty Cholmondeley circuit.

“The Pageant’s track is incredibly narrow and asks a surprising amount of both car and driver,” commented Higgins, who recently set the production road car lap record on the Isle of Man TT circuit. ”If you want to set a decent time, good traction, strong brakes and stability at speed are all essential. The Subaru delivered on all those scores. We were only bettered by a Lamborghini LP570-4 Performante in the dry runs and we were the quickest by far in the wet.”

Marketing Director of Subaru UK, Kenyon Neads, commented: “We’re delighted that the CS400 in Mark’s talented hands took the fight so strongly to the supercar elite. Finishing ahead of cars like the Ariel Atom V8 is a real testament to the engineering and development work by both Cosworth and Subaru.

“Ours was not only the fastest hatchback, but also the quickest vehicle in any class when the circuit was wet, which speaks volumes for its capabilities. It was no surprise the Subaru stand in the paddock was a hive of activity throughout the weekend.”

The limited-edition Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 is currently available from Subaru UK priced £49,995 with a number of competitive and flexible finance offers available.

<![CDATA[COSWORTH IMPREZA STI CS400 TAKES ON SUPERCARS AT PAGEANT OF POWER]]> Subaru has confirmed its attendance at this summer’s Cholmondeley Pageant of Power, the UK’s biggest celebration of power and speed, where it will be showcasing the limited-edition Cosworth Impreza STI CS400.

The 400PS, Cosworth-tuned, turbocharged supercar-slayer will be piloted during the event by former British Rally Champion, Mark Higgins, who recently set the production road car lap record for the Isle of Man TT circuit in a Subaru WRX STI.

The All-Wheel Drive Impreza will be competing alongside a wide array of supercar exotica on the 1.2-mile track, including an Ariel Atom V8, Lamborghini LP570-4 Performante, McLaren MP4-12C and a Noble M600.

Over the course of the three-day Pageant, more than 50,000 visitors will witness Mark Higgins tackling the technical track, as he attempts to beat the 62.68 second lap record set last year by a Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera LP570-4.

In addition to seeing the 2.5-litre Boxer-engined Cosworth take on the challenging sprint course, there will also be a display of two Cosworth Impreza STI CS400s within the paddock where show-goers will be able to see the cars up close, and appreciate some of the detailing like the lightweight Pro-Race 18-inch alloy wheels, AP Racing six-pot brake callipers and Cosworth-branded interior.

Marketing Director of Subaru UK, Kenyon Neads, commented: “The Cholmondeley Pageant of Power is a perfect platform for us to showcase this collaborative effort from two of the big names in automotive performance – Subaru and Cosworth. The circuit record will be tough to match, but we’re confident that the CS400 will take the fight to the supercar elite.”

The 2011 Cholmondeley Pageant of Power will be open to the public from 15 to 17 July at Cholmondeley Castle, Malpas, Cheshire.

The limited-run Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 is currently available from all Subaru dealers from £49,995.

<![CDATA[SUBARU HELPS HEART OF ENGLAND BACK INTO BLOOM]]> The clock is ticking for entrants in 2011’s Heart of England in Bloom competition – an initiative that recognises urban gardening projects that ‘clean up and green up’ local communities. Subaru is sponsoring the event for the second year running and will be supplying the judging panel with a number of All-Wheel-Drive Foresters, allowing them to take to the road in a quest to find this year’s finalists.

The judges will embark on a seven-area tour – encompassing Birmingham and the counties of Staffordshire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Warwickshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire – during July and August in a pair of fuel-efficient Subaru Forester XS Nav Plus models. The panel will review a wide range of urban projects, which have involved thousands of people of all ages and from all walks of life working together to improve their local environments for the benefit of all.

The vehicles chosen for this year’s event feature Subaru’s trademark horizontally-opposed Boxer diesel engine, which emits 167 g/km of CO2, while returning a pump-dodging 625 miles between fill-ups. The judging panel will also have the added peace of mind that, should the going get tough, Subaru’s sure-footed permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system will aid them both on, and off, the beaten track.

Marketing Director of Subaru UK, Kenyon Neads, said: “The Heart of England in Bloom campaign is great for local communities and is an ideal fit for the Subaru brand. We’re proud to continue our support in 2011, and we’re certain the Foresters will prove invaluable for the judging panel. Most importantly, the Foresters will help the judges cover the miles in comfort – whether in town or in the most remote rural communities.”

The Heart of England in Bloom competition is a regional element of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Britain in Bloom campaign, one of the largest horticultural campaigns in Europe. Britain in Bloom champions horticultural good practice, environmental responsibility and community participation.

Subaru’s Forester range starts at £21,375, on-the-road.

<![CDATA[SUBARU TAKES HOME CLASS WIN IN GRUELLING NÜRBURGRING 24-HOUR RACE]]> Subaru claimed an impressive class win at the infamous 24 Hour Nürburgring race last weekend, setting a blistering pace and achieving unbeatable levels of reliability during what is arguably the most world’s toughest motor race.

The All-Wheel-Drive WRX STI tS, prepared by Subaru Tecnica International (STI), the firm’s in-house motorsport division, completed 142 laps (approx 2,953km) in 24 hours - 62.4km further than the car covered in the keenly-fought 2010 race. The WRX STI tS finished first in the SP3T class for sub-2.0-litre turbocharged vehicles, ahead of some notable race-proven machinery, including Team Raeder Mortorsport’s Audi TT S, Kissling Motorsport’s Opel Astra GTC and Michael Kraus’ Mitsubishi Lancer CTO.

Starting at 16.00hrs (local time) on Saturday 25 June in wet conditions, the car was driven around the famous race circuit by Toshihiro Yoshida, who has taken part in the Nürburgring 24-Hour race every year since 2008, and Kouta Sasaki, who competes in Japan’s Super GT series with a Subaru Legacy. Dutchman Carlo van Dam and Germany’s Marcel Engels completed the four-man team. Engels and van Dam both joined the Subaru team last year.

The Nürburgring 24-Hour is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most demanding races, combining both the Grand Prix circuit and the legendary Nordschleife course. One lap of the race is over 25km in length, with 170 corners and a 300m difference in elevation for drivers to contend with. The gruelling event attracted more than 210 entrants this year, including some of the best European touring cars.

Hideharu Tatsumi, General Manager of STI’s Vehicle Experiment Department and Team Manager for the 24-hour race, said: “As always, taking part in this race presents an enormous challenge, and our team has put in a mammoth effort to fight against some of the world’s best cars. In our third year of racing in the SP3T class, it’s clear that we have come a long way. Our success in 2011 stands as testament to the fundamental capability of the WRX STI, and that STI’s direction in creating cars is not wrong” Tatsumi continued.

Based on the standard Subaru WRX STI, the tS competition vehicle has been developed with a focus on weight-saving, improved aerodynamics and performance upgrades on its EJ20 turbo engine. The Nürburgring 24-Hour racer retained the standard model’s permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, a setup that delivers unrivalled balance, stability and handling.

The WRX STI is currently available from all Subaru dealers from £32,995, with free satellite navigation and engine upgrade, taking the power output to 320PS.

<![CDATA[Subaru Smashes Isle of Man Lap Record With Standard WRX STI]]> The long-standing road-car lap record for the Isle of Man TT circuit has been comprehensively smashed in a production-spec Subaru WRX STI saloon. In his very first run around the challenging 37.8-mile course, former British Rally Champion Mark Higgins posted a blistering lap time of 19 minutes and 56.7 seconds, translating to an average speed of 113mph. The peak speed achieved during the lap was 162mph.

Higgins’ time is more than two minutes faster than the previous record, set by the late Tony Pond 21 years ago to the day (on 6 June 1990), at the wheel of an Rover 827. Pond was the first to break the average 100mph barrier in a road car, and his lap record has stood ever since.

The TT event organisers gave Higgins just one lap to conduct his record attempt in the car, and there was no opportunity to carry out high speed practice runs.

The WRX STI used for the record breaking run was a standard Subaru production car, equipped with a 300PS Horizontally-Opposed Boxer engine, unmodified brake callipers and with road-legal Pirelli P Zero Trofeo tyres. Springs and dampers were adjusted to minimise any potential damage when the car encountering the various bumps and jumps at high speed along the course.

In recognition of the speeds involved, and the fact that there are little or no crash barriers around most of the TT road circuit, the WRX STI was fitted with some essential safety enhancements. These included an MSA-specification T45 integrated roll cage, TRS race harnesses and a Lifeline extinguisher system. To help forewarn spectators of the presence of the oncoming car, the Subaru team also fitted the WRX STI with a high-decibel exhaust.

“Setting the record was both the most exhilarating and the most frightening thing I have ever done,” explains Higgins, whose career as a driver in the British and World Rally Championships hasn’t exactly been short of excitement. “The rules allow for a flying start, so I crossed the line at 125mph. I then went down through the Bray Hill junction – normally taken at around 20mph – at over 150mph. Once that tricky section was out of the way I settled into the lap and quickly got used to the balance and sheer pace of the car.

“In the end the lap was simply fantastic, and the WRX STI behaved impeccably,” explains Higgins. “That we managed to set such an impressive time at our first attempt is a great tribute to the Subaru, especially given that so few modifications have been made. The engine pulled incredibly strongly throughout and the cornering capability proved crucial on such a twisty, unforgiving course.”

The TT crowds got fully behind the record attempt, reports Higgins. “The atmosphere out on the circuit was incredible, especially once the spectators heard over the PA system that we were in the process of setting a new record. I could hear the cheers in the car and it really added to the experience.”

The WRX STI is currently available from all Subaru dealers with free satellite navigation and a free power upgrade, taking the power output to a blistering 320PS – more than enough, no doubt, to break the Isle of Man record yet again.

The outright lap record on the TT course was set in 2009 by John McGuinness on a Honda CBR1000RR ‘Fireblade’ motorcycle. McGuinness posted a time of 17 minutes and 12.3 seconds, equivalent to an average speed of 131mph.

Measuring 4,520mm in length, 1,820mm in width and standing 1,430mm tall, the concept model features a new generation 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, Horizontally-Opposed Boxer engine paired with a Lineartronic (CVT) transmission.

The new Subaru Trezia will also be on display. The left-hand-drive-only B-segment vehicle is designed to meet the increasing demand for small, environmentally friendly cars in Europe. The ‘Compact Smart Wagon’ comes in at under four metres and offers remarkable levels of interior space. A 1.3-litre petrol and 1.4-litre diesel (with CO2 emissions of 113 g/km) will be on offer, and although only available in left-hand format, plans to study the development of a right-hand drive version for possible introduction to the UK are currently under review.

<![CDATA[DREAM MADE REALITY FOR WINNER OF STUNNING SUBARU WRX STI]]> Subaru UK, in conjunction with PistonHeads.com, has given away a brand-new four-door WRX STI as part of an attention-grabbing online competition.

Entrants were invited to submit a written article detailing the vehicles that would make up their ‘Dream Garage’. The judges were looking for passion and knowledge, as well as interesting photography. A 30-word explanation as to why they wanted to win the WRX STI was also required.

The winning entry came from 41-year-old Project Manager, Rob Ellis, from Oxford. He said: “I absolutely love it to bits – what a driver’s car! The short-throw gearbox, the seats; it’s just fantastic. I’ve got two young children, so the practicality of the four-door is very welcome, but the car still looks great and I can utilise the performance when the chance presents itself. I’d like to thank Subaru UK and PistonHeads for this superb prize.”

He collected his new pride and joy from Cross Roads Subaru in Shipston-on-Stour. The keys were handed over by UK Marketing Director, Kenyon Neads, and General Manager of Cross Roads, Ben Shimmin.

Neads commented: “Rob’s submission was chosen due to his sheer passion for all things automotive, including Subaru. It stood head and shoulders above the rest with insightful, well-rounded observations about his current and dream cars supported by stunning photography. Well done Rob.”

Subaru’s All-Wheel Drive WRX STI costs £32,995 for both the four- and five-door models. The high-performance 300PS model dispatches the sprint to 62mph in 5.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 158mph*. Standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels, leather and Alcantara STI RECARO seats and Brembo brakes. <![CDATA[WINTER WEATHER DRIVES TRAFFIC TO SUBARU.CO.UK]]> The nation might still be shivering following the coldest December in 110 years, but there is one area of decidedly hot activity – Subaru’s official website, subaru.co.uk.

Last month, when Britain was consistently battered by record levels of snowfall, freezing temperatures and atrocious travelling conditions, the number of visitors to the site increased by 57 per cent compared to the same period in 2010, when visitor numbers hit a previous record high. On Monday 20th December, one of the worst days of the cold snap, hits on Subaru.co.uk rocketed by 135%.

Subaru UK Marketing Director, Kenyon Neads, commented: “For the second year in a row, we’ve seen a direct correlation between wintery chaos on UK roads and people looking to find out more about our sure-footed range. Growing numbers of people understand that in slippery and icy situations there is simply no substitute for our Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, and that’s why our website has been receiving so many hits.”

The Subaru range starts at £17,345 for the 1.5 RC Impreza hatchback and rises to £35,795 for the 3.6R Outback crossover. The new 300PS, 158mph* WRX STI costs £32,995 for both four and five-door models and the last few remaining 400PS Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 are priced at £49,995.

*Figure is for four-door model. Five-door models have a top speed of 155mph.

<![CDATA[Subaru and Toyota Coupé Project]]> Speaking in Car Magazine, Toyota's European Product Planning and Marketing Manager, Duncan McMath:

"But the modern flat-four engine is so indelibly linked with Subaru, how exactly will Toyota ensure that this thing feels like a Toyota? I think the high-performance Subaru DNA is about the grunt, about four-wheel drive and electronic systems, which means they tend to be quite heavy. This is a purer car and will feel quite different."

The main advantage of the flat four is it contributes to an incredibly low centre of gravity. "This unit is 110mm lower than a conventional inline engine would be, but the the top of it is all manifolding. The real weight is much lower than that." The Boxer engine is also significantly shorter, meaning that the weight distribution is close to 50:50 even with the gearbox located at the front rather than the rear."

<![CDATA[SUBARU DRIVERS PERFORM HEROIC DUTIES AS COUNTRY GRINDS TO A HALT]]> With the recent Arctic blast wreaking wintery havoc across the entire UK, All-Wheel Drive Subaru dealers and owners have been forced to take matters into their own hands.

For example, the valiant team at Scottish Subaru dealership, Alex F. Noble & Son, have joined forces with the British Red Cross* in transporting crucial members of its volunteer operation to the worst hit areas of Dalkeith, Midlothian in order to help the elderly and infirm.

The dealership’s eight-strong fleet of permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive Subarus have undertaken numerous tough challenges in recent days, including ferrying patients to and from GP surgeries, collecting vital prescriptions and running errands in temperatures as low as minus 18 degrees Celsius. Footage of the Subaru team in action has been captured by a special BBC programme called Frozen Scotland.

Rhona West, a spokesperson for the British Red Cross said: “With many roads proving impassable across Midlothian, our phones have been ringing non-stop. We are extremely grateful for Alex F. Noble & Son’s skill and assistance during this harsh winter snap.

Other Subaru dealerships have also put their sure-footed Japanese vehicles to good use in snow-bound Britain, including the sales teams at Dennis Common and Auto Ecosse.

“We are supplying the Northumbrian Ambulance service with three of our All-Wheel Drive Impreza vehicles, which are being used as fast-response units for paramedics throughout the county. The teams of medical professionals are full of praise for the new Impreza model, which offers superior levels of traction and stability,” explains Dennis Common, Dealer Principal of Dennis Common Subaru.

Auto Ecosse Subaru in Dundee have also been doing their bit for the community, as Tim Hancock explains: “Our Subaru Outback demonstrator has already proved extremely beneficial to the local community this winter. We have ferried numerous stranded nurses to and from the Accident and Emergency Department at Dundee’s Ninewells hospital. In fact, we’ve had such a positive response to our support that we’re now employing a driver to go out and rescue members of the public who are stranded in the snow and ice.”

In addition to the support offered by the firm’s dealers, Subaru UK was also recently notified of a rather unusual story involving two courageous owners.

When student paramedic, Andy Bawler, and paramedic, Tracey Dale, from Godstone Ambulance Station, Surrey, were called out to a remote area of the county to treat 20-year-old Jess Gibson, they got stuck in the snow.

The ambulance clinicians quickly decided the young lady needed hospital treatment; however they couldn’t turn their vehicle around to get back up the country track they’d driven down. Despite a number of people attempting dig them free with shovels, the vehicle remained stuck fast. But, much to everyone’s delight, a pair of Subaru Imprezas driven by two Scandinavian tourists drove down the road, after their satellite navigation systems had told them to take the rural track.

These two Knights in shining Subarus quickly pulled the ambulance back up the track and on to the gritted main road. Paramedic Andy Bawler spoke of his gratitude: “I did ask the guys for their names but in all the action didn’t write them down. I’d really like to properly thank them for their amazing help. It feels like someone might just have been looking down on us.”

Subaru’s All-Wheel Drive range starts at £16,995 for the entry level Impreza 1.5 RC, and rises to £35,795 for the top of the range Outback 3.6R.

<![CDATA[STRIKING SUBARU IMPREZA DESIGN CONCEPT DEBUTS AT LA AUTO SHOW]]>
  • Stunning concept hints at possible future design direction
  • Debut for next-generation Subaru Boxer engine and CVT transmission
  • Vehicle boasts latest infotainment and safety technology
  • Japanese manufacturer Subaru recently unveiled the Impreza Design Concept, which previews the carmaker’s new ‘Confidence in Motion’ design and brand strategy, at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

For the sporty four-door coupe the designers blended two ideas – ‘dynamic flow’ and ‘confident stance’ – while also incorporating Subaru’s core engineering values of dynamic performance through permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, safety, enjoyment and quality.

The Impreza Design Concept is powered by a combination of the 2.0-litre naturally aspirated Boxer engine with a Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). This combination represents Subaru's next-generation of powertrain. (Lineartronic is currently only available on 2.5-litre models in the UK).

From the front, the Impreza Design Concept is clearly recognizable as a Subaru, with a hexagonal grille and wing-motif located between the hawk-eye-style headlights. Fin-shaped fog lamps, which mirror the wing motif, display a fresh expression of Subaru’s identity. The car’s low-and-wide stance – first seen on the 2011 WRX STI – is meant to convey security and safety, while the prominent wheel arches emphasise the vehicle’s sure-footed stance.

In profile, it has a sleek, continuous line from the A-pillar, along the roof and through the C-pillar. This design allows for both a roomy cabin and an excellent aerodynamic performance. Subaru designers strove for simple and clean lines rather than complicated forms. This produces a contrast with the powerful bumper design and results in a lean side view, accented by silver window frames.

On the inside, the smooth integration of the instrument panel with the door trim and armrests in the Impreza Design Concept suggest a sporty yet comfortable drive. A large touch-screen multimedia display in the centre of the dash combine the control functions for the navigation system with those of the vehicle information and audio.

Subaru's new active safety EyeSight system is installed along the front edge of the roof. The images taken by the camera are relayed to a monitor in the centre of the tri-gauge instrument binnacle. EyeSight is also connected to the firm’s latest collision-prevention technology, underscoring the carmakers safety credentials.

<![CDATA[SUBARU STAGES BIG HIT AT SKI & BOARD SHOW]]> Over 20,000 winter sport enthusiasts attended the recent Subaru-sponsored Ski and Board Show at the NEC, and they were treated to some gravity-defying stunt action.

The Big Air Freestyle Show, which saw the only 2010 UK appearance of the renowned Big Air Demo team, wowed visitors with some truly breath-taking aerobatics. The talented troupe of ski and board aerialists – which counts former Olympic and World Cup champions among its number – put on an incredible display as they fearlessly launched themselves off a 14-metre-high hydraulic ramp with jaw-dropping 40-degree departure angle.

The team members are household names among extreme sport fans. Athletes like Daschinsky Dmitri from Belarus, the Swiss, Andreas Isoz, Italians Chicco Ciapponi and Danny Morandini and Britain’s own Sarah Ainsworth were all on hand to enthral the enthusiastic NEC crowd.

Ski and Board Show organiser, John Cooper, said: “The aerial antics of the Big Air Demo team are always a huge hit with the crowds at the show, and this year was no different. The skiers and boarders involved are top athletes and this really shows in the technical ability they demonstrate.”

Subaru UK Marketing Director, Kenyon Neads, added: “Our links with the skiing and boarding fraternity are well known, but it was still refreshing to see so many show goers take a break from the Big Air action and stop by our stand. It was also interesting to note how many of the European ski-resort-based exhibitors were themselves Subaru owners. Proof indeed that those who need AWD buy Subaru.”

The 2011 Ski and Board Show is scheduled to take place on 28 – 30 October. <![CDATA[DOWNEY JNR TESTS IMPREZA TO DESTRUCTION IN HOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTER, DUE DATE ]]> If you were in a race against time to get home for the birth of your child, what car would you chose to do it in? Well, in forthcoming comedy flick, Due Date, box-office legend Robert Downey Jnr’s character opts for a Subaru Impreza, and the car is put through its paces in a dash across the United States.

The comedy, directed by Todd Phillips, follows highly strung, father-to-be Peter Highman (Downey Jnr), as he tries to make his way home in time for his wife’s due date. Highmanis forced to start a road trip with bothersome aspiring actor Ethan Tremblay (Zach Galifianakis – the Hangover), and the unlikely duo take to their hilarious, incident filled road trip in a Paprika Red Pearl Impreza hatchback.

The All-Wheel-Drive hatchback copes admirably with all that the duo can throw at it before its role in the movie ends dramatically, when, with the troublesome Tremblay at the wheel, it is inadvertently launched from a motorway flyover and lands on its roof on the road below (a seriously stern crash test for any car).

Due Date (www.duedatemovie.warnerbros.com), which is a Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures production, hits UK cinemas on Friday 5 November and also co-stars Oscar winner, Jamie Foxx, and Michelle Monaghan.

The Subaru Impreza range starts at £16,995 for the 1.5-litre RC.

<![CDATA[SUBARU EXTENDS SPONSORSHIP OF EUROPE’S BIGGEST HORSE TRIAL EVENT]]> Subaru UK is extending its current title sponsorship of Europe's biggest annual International horse trial, the Subaru Houghton International, until 2013.

This year's four-day Subaru Houghton International, which took place at Houghton Hall near King's Lynn in Norfolk in May, was officially recognised as the biggest event of its kind in Europe, after 358 riders from 19 nations took part. Event Director Alec Lochore led the small in-house team and a voluntary workforce of 320 people in constructing 112 challenging jumps run over 3 separate 5,500-metre courses – aided by a fleet of 10 Subaru support vehicles. The resulting equestrian extravaganza attracted numerous Olympic and world champion riders.

Subaru Brand Ambassador and Olympic hopeful, Oliver Townend, said "The Subaru Houghton is a highlight of the eventing calendar and one I always very much look forward to going to. This is excellent news that further consolidates this tremendous event."

"Houghton International has fast developed into a true highlight of the British equestrian sporting calendar, and is a perfect fit for the Subaru brand," comments Paul Tunnicliffe, Subaru UK's Managing Director. "I'm delighted that we will be back at Houghton Hall for the next three years, welcoming top-name competitors as well as existing and prospective fans of the Subaru model range."

In addition to being a Subaru brand ambassador and managing Subaru Houghton International, 39-year old Alec Lochore has just been confirmed as Eventing Manager for the London 2012 Olympics. Working alongside the London Organising Committee, Lochore will lead the team that delivers the equestrian events at an all-new Olympic facility at Greenwich Park. "Alec has impeccable event organisation credentials, and the decision to put him in charge of the new Olympic equestrian events is a ringing endorsement of his capabilities," adds Tunnicliffe. "We're proud and pleased to have him on-board with Subaru."

Lochore welcomed the sponsorship extension. "Subaru is a great supporter of equestrianism in Britain and has helped grow the Houghton International into the major event that it is today. When I'm not riding I need a spacious, practical and go-anywhere vehicle to help me go about my business, and Subarus are perfect for that."

<![CDATA[HORSEPOWER MEETS FLOWER POWER – SUBARU BACKS HEART OF ENGLAND IN BLOOM]]> Judgement day beckons for the shortlisted entries in the Heart of England in Bloom competition – a key part of the national Britain in Bloom initiative that recognises urban gardening projects that ‘clean up and green up’ local communities. Subaru is giving its backing by providing vehicles for the team of judges that will this month embark on an epic seven-county tour to pick their winners.

Tasked with spanning counties including Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire during July and August, the quartet of judges has been equipped with an armoury of All-Wheel Drive Subarus. These include a Legacy 2.0D SE NavPlus, Legacy 2.5i SE NavPlus, Outback 2.0D SE NavPlus and a Forester 2.0D XS NavPlus.

Most of the allocated vehicles chosen for this sizeable expedition feature Subaru’s unique and uncannily smooth ‘Boxer’ diesel engine. This powerplant will eat up the miles in calm and efficient style – installed in the Outback 2.0D SE NavPlus, it emits just 167 (g/km) of CO2 while returning an impressive combined fuel economy figure of 44.1 mpg.

Should members of the judging panel get caught in any sticky situations, they can rest assured Subaru’s capable permanent Symmetrical AWD system will aid them both in the urban jungle and out on rural terrain.

Marketing Director of Subaru UK, Kenyon Neads, said: “We’re excited to be the driving force behind the Heart of England in Bloom campaign. The vehicles selected are the pick of an impressive bunch, offering the go-anywhere versatility and practicality demanded by the judging panel. Pair this to the fuel efficiency of our diesel models and the Heart of England in Bloom campaign judges have a winning combination.”

<![CDATA[NEW COSWORTH IMPREZA STI CS400]]> The new Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 is the result of one of the most eagerly anticipated automotive collaborations in recent times. The first genuine Cosworth-developed road car since 1996, the latest limited edition Impreza offers performance-car fans the thrill of a lifetime combined with exclusivity – production will be restricted to 75 cars.

The Cosworth-tuned, turbocharged vehicle is one of the world's most accelerative hatchbacks. The renowned 2.5-litre turbocharged 'Boxer' engine is transformed to produce 33 per cent more power, drawing heavily on Cosworth's extensive Formula 1 experience. The engine, which drives all four wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox, boasts an impressive 400 ps and the new model reaches 62 mph in just 3.7 seconds, going on to cover a quarter mile in 12.75 seconds at a terminal speed of 107 mph. Top speed is limited to 155mph.

The Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 features an extensive range of Cosworth-engineered components in the engine, turbo system, exhaust, suspension, brakes and wheels, plus subtle improvements to the exterior and interior styling to create a truly distinctive high performance car with everyday hatchback practicality.

Marketed exclusively in the UK in right-hand drive form, the Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 is available in a choice of three exterior colours (Spark Silver, Dark Grey and San Remo Red), and is priced from £49,995 on-the-road.

Engine delivers a 33 per cent power hike

At the heart of the new Cosworth Impreza is a heavily revised version of the marque's famous horizontally-opposed, all-aluminium Boxer engine. The 'flat-four' power unit is removed from the car, hand finished, and several internal and ancillary components are replaced with up-rated items, specified by Cosworth.

As with all Impreza 'Boxer' engines, the STI Cosworth unit features twin overhead camshafts per cylinder bank (DOHC) plus an Active Valve Control System (AVCS) to deliver variable valve timing and enhance low-speed pulling power.

The focus of the Cosworth engine upgrade was to keep the enhancements simple, efficient and as close as possible to the original equipment design to guarantee reliability and easy maintenance at regular Subaru dealerships.

Internal upgrades include high-performance pistons, which are manufactured using the same methods as those employed to create Cosworth's Formula 1 pistons. Special features reduce carbon build-up, minimise friction and reduce weight.

Forged connecting rods are made from high-strength 4340 (EN24) steel and the special Cosworth engine bearings boast a unique combination of design, metallurgy and engineering. Heavy duty cylinder head studs, high-performance multi layered head gaskets and a higher-pressure oil pump are also fitted.

The overall result is a huge increase in torque higher up the rev range, and significantly improved in-gear acceleration. This not only makes the Impreza more tractable for day-to-day road use, but also a far sharper tool on the race track.

New turbocharger and 'breathe easy' exhaust systems

An all-new Cosworth turbocharging system features a new compressor design and wastegate actuator to supply up-rated boost pressure and deliver increased power.

A unique exhaust system was developed to allow the engine to 'breathe' more easily and unleash its full potential. Larger capacity tubular manifolds and increased diameter downpipes speed up the evacuation of hot gases. The first catalyst is a non-restrictive design and larger tail pipes give the exhaust note a unique tone.

After the in-depth Cosworth performance upgrade which includes an ECU re-map, the boxer engine in the CS400 generates 33 per cent more power (400 ps at 5,750 rpm, compared with 300 ps at 6,000 rpm for the standard Impreza WRX STI), and 542 Nm of torque, while remaining within the torque capacity design limits of the original Impreza drivetrain.

Manual transmission and All-Wheel Drive system

To handle the increased power of the Cosworth-tuned engine, the Impreza STI's six-speed manual transmission has carbon synchromesh applied to the top three ratios and a short throw linkage for quicker shifting.

There is also an upgraded single-plate clutch with a revised pressure plate, bearing and disc. The gearbox and final drive ratios are unchanged.

The Cosworth Impreza's full-time All-Wheel-Drive transmission with front and rear limited-slip differentials, features a 50/50 front to rear torque split as the default, however, the torque split is varied electronically according to changing conditions. The multi-mode Driver Control centre differential with viscous coupling senses which axle has the better grip and varies the split ratio in milliseconds to distribute torque accordingly, thus maximising traction and minimising the possibility of wheelspin.

    Fine-tuned suspension

Improving the Cosworth Impreza's handling, steering feel and driver feedback – without compromising ride comfort – was a primary target for the development team.

Retaining Subaru's original suspension layout and major components, Cosworth and a team of chassis engineers collaborated with Bilstein and Eibach technicians to tailor a ride/handling/steering package that was ideally matched to the new model's increased performance.

Special Eibach coil springs and new Bilstein inserts, featuring unique damping characteristics, were manufactured to Cosworth's specifications. The ride height was lowered by 10 mm at the front.

The benefits of this fettling are twofold. Firstly, there is a big improvement in ride quality generally, making the Impreza easier to live with on a day-to-day basis. Secondly, its on-the-limit behaviour is more focused and composed. The damping upgrades mean that there is less pitch and roll when turning into corners, meaning that keen drivers can get back on the power earlier and make the most of the car's Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system.

Upgraded 'racing' brakes enhance stopping power

To match the new Impreza Cosworth's supercar pace, Cosworth commissioned AP Racing to develop more powerful front brakes. Larger diameter (355 mm) ventilated front discs were adopted, with motorsport-style six-pot callipers featuring bespoke pistons operating on larger brake pads.

The difference in performance is immediately noticeable. The harder pads help to minimise fade, meaning that drivers can count on the AP stoppers for effective retardation time and time again.

The standard Impreza WRX STI's rear brake discs, overall brake balance and original ABS system have been retained.

'Stand-out' looks, plus new style wheels

The outstanding performance of the Cosworth Impreza is reflected in its 'stand-out' appearance and standard Xenon headlamps. The lowered ride height and wider track give the car a whole new stance which is reinforced by a new shape front bumper, new fog lights, upper and lower mesh grilles and a new rear spoiler.

Discreet Cosworth badging is carried on the lower grille, front seats, brake callipers and floor mats. Individually numbered plaques are fitted on the engine and door sills. Each Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 is supplied with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

Although the new model's alloy wheels are a similar overall size to those of the regular Impreza WRX STI model – 18 x 8.5 inch – they are lighter and stronger. Called 'Pro Race' and finished in anthracite the latest wheels from the Team Dynamics range were selected as compatible with the Subaru's five-stud design. These wheels have a 43 mm offset (the standard STI wheel's offset is 55 mm) and extend the track by 12 mm – improving handling and filling the car's wheel arches more effectively for a more aggressive stance.

The new wheels are fitted with high performance, low profile Michelin SP3 tyres chosen for their dry- and wet-road grip, durability, and low noise levels. Tyre size is 245/40 R18 and the tread pattern is directional.

Interior modifications and generous premium equipment

Inside, the sporty new Recaro front seats, the rear seats and steering wheel are all re-trimmed in Cosworth-branded black leather. Also distinguishing the CS400 are Piano Black centre stack and trim accents, and the fitment of privacy glass.

Standard features carried-over from the WRX STI model include: LED tail lamps, front and rear electric windows, 10-speaker, six-disc radio/CD player plus front, side and curtain airbags.

    Full ownership benefits

The new Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 comes with the reassurance of a three-year or 36,000-mile warranty plus 12-year anti-corrosion cover and three-year paintwork warranty.

This is in addition to three years' membership of Subaru Assistance – a comprehensive home and roadside repair and recovery package throughout the UK and Europe administered by The AA.

<![CDATA[COSWORTH IMPREZA WILL HAVE SUPERCAR-HUMBLING PACE.]]> The result of one of the most eagerly anticipated automotive collaborations in recent times is heading fast towards Subaru dealerships.

The Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 officially goes on sale in June, and is set to offer performance-car fans the thrill of a lifetime.

Subaru has confirmed the car will boast an impressive 400PS (395bhp) at 5,750rpm, sufficient to dispatch the 0-62mph sprint in just 3.7 seconds (compared to 300PS / 296bhp at 6,000rpm, and 5.2 seconds for the standard Impreza WRX STI). This ensures the Cosworth-tuned car will be one of the most accelerative all-wheel-drive hatchbacks ever.

Subaru also reports that the Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 will feature a bespoke brake package – with six-pot callipers and 355mm discs at the front – developed in partnership with AP Racing, giving the car prodigious stopping power.

Coventry-based AP Racing is a leading supplier of brake and clutch components to teams in the Formula One Championship and the World Rally Championship, as well as to leading supercar brands including Bugatti. A wide range of further upgrades have been made to the suspension, exhaust and to the donor Impreza’s exterior and interior styling.

An exclusive, limited edition run of 75 Cosworth Impreza STI CS400s will be produced, and full details of pricing and technical specification will be announced closer to the on-sale date.

<![CDATA[SUBARU HOUGHTON INTERNATIONAL GALLOPS INTO RECORD BOOKS]]> It’s official! The Subaru Houghton International is Europe’s biggest international horse trials, with some 358 riders competing in this year’s four-day extravaganza in Norfolk, held between 27 and 30 May.

Event Director, Alec Lochore, said: "Welcoming so many competitors from 19 nations to this year’s Subaru Houghton International was very exciting and Subaru and our events team rose to the challenge. The field was diverse, comprising numerous Olympic and World champion riders and over 200 young amateur riders. Our visitor numbers held up very well, despite the rain, and we were thrilled to hear Subaru announce that it is to continue with the title sponsorship of this very popular event.”

Now in its fourth year, the challenging Houghton course featured a daunting 112 jumps positioned along its 5,500 metres. It required a voluntary workforce of 320 people, 10 Subaru support vehicles and 10 miles of cordon to keep everything in shape and running smoothly. A total purse of over £30,000 was up for grabs by the top riders.

It was a very successful event for Australia’s Stephen Way, who took top spot in the CIC three-star class, and Subaru brand ambassador and London 2012 Olympic hopeful, Emily Llewellyn, finished in second place in the CCI two-star behind another Australian, Lucinda Fredericks.

Kenyon Neads, Subaru UK’s Marketing Director, added: “We choose to support eventing because those who get involved at all levels of this sport are exactly the same people we think would, and indeed do, benefit from Subaru ownership. Our vehicles offer the go-anywhere versatility and practicality demanded by those who lead active outdoor lifestyles. I am delighted that we will be back at Houghton in 2011.”

<![CDATA[SUBARU BACKS FEMALE EVENTING’S RISING STAR]]> Emily Llewellyn, the UK's top young female eventer and London 2012 Olympic hopeful, has become an official Subaru Brand Ambassador.

Based in East Sussex, Emily is the only rider to have ridden in seven consecutive European Youth Championship teams, winning a grand total of five gold medals. She finished in 15th position (from a top international field of 84 entrants) at this year’s Badminton Horse Trials, and won last year’s Under-25 Championships. Emily currently sits fifth in the British Eventing Top 20 Rider Table for the 2010 season.

As part of the deal with Subaru, the 20-year-old riding prodigy has been given a specially liveried 2.0D XC Forester featuring Union Jack decals to drive. Emily will also be taking time out of her busy competition schedule to represent the All-Wheel Drive brand at this year’s Houghton International Horse Trials, scheduled to take place between 27-30 May.

Speaking about her ambassadorial status, Emily said: “I am so thrilled to be supported by Subaru. The Forester is a fantastic car and has exceeded all of my expectations. I find it both powerful yet light to drive and, being All-Wheel Drive, it covers me for every circumstance that I may come across in my equestrian life.”

Subaru UK Marketing Director, Kenyon Neads, added: “It’s clear that Emily is one of the top competitors in her sport and Subaru is proud to back this future world champion. Our cars continue to be highly popular in the equestrian world, thanks to their go-anywhereAll-Wheel Drive capabilities and practicality. We’re pleased to give something back by supporting eventing at many levels right across the UK, from sponsoring major competitions to helping accomplished riders reach their full potential.”

<![CDATA[Subaru Legacy named Japan's safest car]]> The 2010 Subaru Legacy has been officially named ‘Japan’s safest car’, after being awarded the Grand Prix 09/10 in Japan’s New Car Assessment Programme (JNCAP).

This is the third consecutive year in which a Subaru vehicle has taken the jury’s top honours. Following in the footsteps of the Impreza in 2007 and the Forester in 2008, the Subaru Legacy was the only vehicle out of the 17 tested to receive the coveted award.

The Legacy was rated as the safest passenger car in the collision safety performance tests for driver and front passenger. It also achieved the highest rating in the pedestrian head protection test.

This latest accolade for Legacy comes hot on the heels of myriad other international crash test achievements. It received the top five-star rating in the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP), was awarded five stars for occupant safety in the latest Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP), and was named ‘2010 Top Safety Pick’ by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) in the US.

Subaru UK Marketing Director, Kenyon Neads, commented: “It’s clear from the number of top scores awarded to the Legacy in crash tests right around the world that it is one of the safest cars on sale today. When you combine these impressive safety scores with our trademark permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, world renowned boxer engines and the Legacy’s superb interior space and practicality, the result is a unique and highly desirable family car proposition.”

<![CDATA[Forester Powers Incredible Snowsport 'First']]> A pair of Subaru Foresters helped make British snowsport history recently by supporting a unique challenge – to ski in both the south of England and the north of Scotland on the same day, and travelling between locations using a single tank of fuel.

The Forester’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive made light work of the severe snowy conditions encountered up in the Highlands of Scotland, and the SUV finished the test with ample diesel to spare, averaging an impressive 45mpg during the entire 480-mile trip – even when overflowing with kit and sitting at the national motorway speed limit.

After taking to the slopes of the SnoZone indoor ski centre at Xscape, Milton Keynes, at 4.00am, the intrepid ski team then set off for the Cairngorm Mountain Resort. Arriving at 2.25pm in fine fettle after a comfortable and largely traffic-free cruise, they then hit the pistes once again to complete their incredible feat.

During the nine-hour journey north, the 2.0-litre ‘Boxer’ diesel Foresters used in the challenge both averaged around their official claimed extra-urban mpg figure, while sitting at the national speed limit. One of them even returned a petrol-pump-dodging 57.6mpg.

The revised suspension of the 2010-model year Foresters – incorporating uprated springs and dampers – eased away the motorway miles, and kept the drivers entertained when the route north took in some twisty A and B roads.

The Foresters also made short work of stowing all the required skis, boots and poles, thanks to a commodious 1610-litres of luggage space with the rear seats folded. Accessing this is now even easier, as the rear seats in the latest top-spec Foresters can be dropped forward quickly and easily with the pull of a small lever located in the boot.

Kenyon Neads, Subaru UK’s Marketing and PR Director, added: “We had no doubts that the Forester would be the perfect support vehicle for this snowy challenge. It is one of the cleanest and most fuel-efficient SUV’s available, has ample space for passengers and luggage, and its All-Wheel-Drive capability and revised suspension make light work of all road surfaces – from motorways to icy country lanes.”

The 2010 Model Year Forester range costs from £20,205. The 2.0D XS NavPlus models used in the snowsport challenge cost £27,820 and boast 17-inch alloy wheels, sat-nav, heated leather seats, cruise control and roof rails as standard.

<![CDATA[Subaru gallops into new British eventing season at Burnham]]> They’re unbeatable off road, sure-footed on treacherous terrain and great to look at...and that’s just the horses!

Subaru UK has announced the continuation of its vehicle sponsorship of UK show jumping and eventing, with the first competition of the season, Burnham Market International, scheduled to take place between 1 and 3 April.

The Japanese manufacturer will provide a number of its All-Wheel-Drive vehicles to competition judges and course officials. Event organiser, Alec Lochore, believes that the Subaru Outbacks are ideally suited to the job: “We need vehicles that can get around a muddy course quickly and reliably, while at the same time delivering a refined ride and offering a spacious interior for the officials’ assorted gear. Subarus tick all of the boxes.”

The Burnham Market International is one of the UK’s top eventing showdowns, with many of the sports superstars attending. For example, this year will see World Champion Zara Phillips, World Number One William Fox Pitt, and eventing legend Mark Todd all take to the saddle.

What’s more, somewhere in the region of 8,000 spectators are expected to turn up over the course of the three-day event. Not only will they be able to take in all the show jumping action, but there will also be over 40 exhibition stands and stalls on site, including a display of Subaru vehicles.

Subaru UK Marketing Director, Kenyon Neads, said: “The connection between Subaru and horse eventing is a logical and strong one. We make cars that are ideally suited to those who lead action-packed outdoor lifestyles, including horse owners and riders. We’re looking forward to an eventing summer packed with equine thrills.”

Burnham Market is situated just off the A149 near Burnham Deepdale, Norfolk. It will take place on 1-3 April. For more information, contact the event organisers on 08456 209 961.

<![CDATA[SUBARU AT 80TH GENEVA INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW]]> Subaru’s presence at the 80th Geneva International Motor Show will feature a number of technological and environmentally friendly innovations, including a revolutionary ‘Boxer’-hybrid concept vehicle and a pure-electric city car.

    • Stunning Hybrid Tourer makes European debut
    • STELLA EV charges in to Swiss motor show
    • Unique ‘Boxer’ diesel technology on display

Subaru’s presence at the 80th Geneva International Motor Show will feature a number of technological and environmentally friendly innovations, including a revolutionary ‘Boxer’-hybrid concept vehicle and a pure-electric city car.

Featuring the world’s first ‘Boxer’-hybrid powerplant and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD), the Hybrid Tourer Concept will make its European debut at the Swiss expo. The striking show car marries Subaru’s design DNA with an opulent and spacious cabin accessed through elongated gullwing-style doors, and an eye-catching, sculpted body.

The absence of B-pillars affords a heightened sense of light and space to the interior, providing occupants with a less obstructed view of the outside world. The swept-back panoramic windscreen and a height-adjustable dashboard afford the driver a similarly unhindered vantage point.

The innovative hybrid system uses Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and a 2.0-litre horizontally-opposed, direct-injection, turbocharged petrol ‘Boxer’ engine, allied to two electric motors – Subaru remains the only company to mate this engine layout to a hybrid drivetrain. The electric motors are powered by lithium-ion batteries – a 10kW item at the front and a 20kW unit at the rear.

In normal driving conditions the direct-injection petrol engine is used, but at lower speeds and start-up, the rear electric motor drives the car. The forward electric unit, which is mainly used as a power generator, kicks in to assist performance and efficiency while tackling inclines. Subaru’s in-house designed Lineartronic automatic transmission is featured, further boosting fuel efficiency and driving performance.

    STELLA EV

Continuing the ‘green’ theme, Subaru will be showcasing its Plug-in STELLA EV. The lithium-ion battery-powered, 90km-per-charge, 40kW, electric vehicle can be recharged up to 80 per cent of its capacity in about 15 minutes when using its quick charging system. Under normal circumstances the city car is fully rechargeable in five hours when using an AC240V power outlet.

    ‘BOXER’ DIESEL TECHNOLOGY

Visitors to the Japanese manufacturer’s stand will also be able to take in a number of ‘Boxer’-diesel model displays, highlighting Subaru’s unique Horizontally-Opposed engine technologies. Impreza, Forester, Legacy and Outback models are all currently available with the unique-to-Subaru 2.0-litre diesel engine configuration, which offers both improved fuel economy and a low centre of gravity.

With these exhibits and throughout the entire show stand design, Subaru will be showcasing its efforts to integrate enjoyable and reliable driving with environmentally friendly motoring solutions.

The company press conference, hosted by President Ikuo Mori, is scheduled to take place at the Subaru stand in Hall 2 on March 2nd, 2010 at 15.45h.

<![CDATA[SUBARU OUTPERFORMS RIVALS IN MAJOR CRASH TEST PROGRAMME]]> Subaru vehicles are among the safest on the road, according to a new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in America.

The insurance-industry-backed organisation, which conducted a series of stringent frontal, side, rear and rollover crash tests on a wide variety of vehicles, found that Subaru was the only manufacturer to score enough points to receive its ‘Top Safety Pick’ Award for every model it entered. In pulling off this remarkable crash test coup, the Japanese firm outperformed the likes of Volvo, Volkswagen, Audi, Honda and Ford.

Only vehicles with roofs more than twice as strong as the current minimum standard and fitted with ESP (VDC in Subaru models), were considered for the tests. Previous studies conducted by the institute suggested that, compared with minimum-standard vehicles, cars with stronger roofs reduce the risk of serious and fatal injury in single-vehicle rollovers by about 50 per cent.

“With the addition of our new roof strength evaluation, our crash test results now cover all four of the most common kinds of crashes,” said Institute President, Adrian Lund. “Consumers can use this list to zero-in on the vehicles that are on the top rung for safety. Cars and SUVs that win Top Safety Pick are designs that go far beyond minimum federal safety standards.”

Subaru’s five IIHS Top Safety Pick awards came in four different categories: the New Legacy and Outback were recognised in the Midsize Car group; the Impreza was named in the Small Car category; the Forester was awarded the prize in the Small SUV section; and Tribeca in the Midsize SUV class.

Prices for the New Legacy start at £23,295 for the 2.0D S, and range up to £27,295 for the 2.5i SE NavPlus Lineartronic. The New Outback is available in five different guises. The line-up starts with the £26,295 2.0-litre diesel SE and 2.5i SE petrol models, and is topped by the £33,295 petrol 3.6-litre R.

The Forester SUV costs from £19,115 for the base 2.0-litre X model and rises to £25,965 for the range-topping 2.0-litre D XSn. Impreza hatchbacks start at £12,730 for the entry level 1.5-litre R and rise to £30,350 for the 330PS 2.5-litre STI 330 S.

<![CDATA[SUBARU GIVES SANTA AND CHILDREN’S HOSPICE A HELPING HAND THIS CHRISTMAS]]> Subaru has teamed up with a leading East Anglian children’s charity and a local motoring enthusiast to spread a little Christmas cheer this year.

Sarah Turner, of Hingham, Norfolk, is driving a Subaru Forester to Lapland in order to hand-deliver Christmas letters to Santa Claus from children cared for by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

EACH provides care and support for life-threatened children and their families in their own homes, as well as at the charity’s three hospices based in Ipswich in Suffolk, Quidenham in Norfolk, and Milton in Cambridgeshire.

Turner set off on her 2,000-mile trip to Lapland from EACH’s Quidenham hospice on Saturday November 14.

Speaking before heading for the tundra, she said: “The diesel Forester will be the perfect travelling companion for what is sure to be a very challenging trip. With the ‘Boxer’ diesel giving brilliant fuel economy I can cross Europe without a guided tour of the fuel stations, and once I hit the winter weather the Symetrical All-Wheel Drive will take good care of me. Crucially, there is also ample space for all the post for Santa.”

After driving across France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, Turner will hit Scandinavia where the weather is likely to turn nasty, even in early November. She’s expecting to see plenty of snow, so required a vehicle that could handle both adverse driving conditions and long distances.

Turner is no stranger to driving in extreme and unusual places, having crossed arctic Canada back in 2004 using the now infamous ‘ice roads’ in temperatures that dropped to around minus 50 degrees centigrade.

Danielle Clarke, EACH community fundraising co-ordinator for South Norfolk and Norwich, said: “It’s great that Sarah has been able to help us out here at EACH with a unique journey to Lapland to deliver letters to Father Christmas. We rely heavily upon voluntary donations and Sarah’s journey should go some way to raising the profile of EACH in the local community and beyond.”

  • Combined and 155 g/km CO2
  • 127 mph top speed and 0-62 mph in 9.0 seconds
  • Low centre-of-gravity coupled with Symmetrical All-Wheel drive provides superb handling and traction backed up by the security of Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control
  • Exceptional specification includes 17 inch alloys, HID headlamps with pop-up washers, electrically-folding door mirrors, front projector foglamps, 6CD player with MP3 facility, cruise control, windscreen wiper deicer, climate control and heated sports seats
  • Front, side and curtain airbags
  • Two model Impreza diesel range – 2.0D RC and 2.0D RX – complements 1.5 and 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol models, the limited edition 2.5 WRX turbo, plus range-topping WRX STI Type UK and 330S
  • Having already earned its stripes in Legacy, Outback and Forester, Subaru’s widely acclaimed 150PS Boxer Diesel engine is now available in the stylish Impreza, offering the perfect complement to the model’s supreme five-door practicality. The sporty, yet sophisticated, Impreza 2.0D offers customers a unique take on the small family car, combining spacious, hatchback flexibility and diesel frugality with the superb, confidence inspiring grip delivered by Subaru’s trademark Symmetrical All-Wheel drive system.

The newcomer clocks up a refreshing 47.9mpg on the combined cycle to give a potential range of 670 miles on a full tank. In true Impreza tradition it’s no slouch, capable of hustling from 0 to 62 mph in a distinctly crisp 9.0 seconds before hitting a top speed of 127 mph.

The Boxer engine layout – very much a Subaru speciality – comes with all the benefits typical of its kind. Its compact size means that it sits low-down in the chassis to give every Impreza an ultra-low centre of gravity for outstanding handling, great grip, reduced body roll and agile steering.

The horizontally opposed cylinder layout ensures class-leading noise, vibration and harshness and a smooth response that should maintain Subaru’s established reputation as a manufacturer of engines that last for years.

But beyond its exceptional refinement this punchy turbodiesel offers excellent flexibility and good throttle response, delivering a massive 350 Nm (258 lb ft) of peak torque between 1800 and 2400 rpm. Ably assisted by the carefully selected ratios of the sixspeed manual gearbox, effortless performance in everyday driving conditions comes as standard.

Teaming the front strut/rear multi-link chassis with the sure-footedness of Subaru’s permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive makes for a winning combination. Backed up by Subaru’s Vehicle Dynamics Control stability system, it means owners can drive safely in the knowledge that their Impreza will instantly divert power from the wheels that slip to the wheels that grip – it providing the security and reassurance of active safety at all times, whatever the road conditions.

What makes the Impreza Boxer Diesel driving experience all the more satisfying is the host of luxuries that come as standard, such as climate control air conditioning, Xenon headlamps complete with pop-up washers, four power windows, 6CD autochanger, front foglamps, heated front seats and cruise control. The large door mirrors, which can be folded in at the touch of a button, are electrically heated and adjustable.

The Impreza 2.0D comes in a choice of two grades, RC and RX. The former comes with all the equipment described above yet is still priced at a competitive £20,000 on the road.

Step up to the RX at £22,255 and gain keyless smart entry, an electric sunroof, rear privacy glass, full leather trim and electric adjustment of the driver’s seat.

<![CDATA[Subaru Imprezas on-track for reliabilty record]]> Subaru’s iconic Impreza has cemented its reputation for reliability in the most testing of environments – thundering around Castle Combe circuit, as part of the Wiltshire track’s award-winning Racing School – for the past seven years, fault-free.

Subaru started their unique relationship with Castle Combe in 2002, after a successful dealer day at the 1.85-mile Wiltshire circuit. Since then, there has been a trio of first WRX and (since 2008), 300 bhp, 300 lb ft STI Type UK Imprezas used at the circuit. The STIs are used primarily for the Racing School, but also; ARDS race licence testing, showing the ‘racing line’ to track day novices, corporate entertainment programmes, course car/safety car duties at racing meets and, best of all, for ‘white knuckle high speed passenger rides’ – something the STI relishes.

The cars are replaced after a year (c5,000 miles) of use and abuse on track. And, over the successful seven-year period at Castle Combe, the fleet of first WRX, and now the STI Imprezas has had more than 12,000 test pilots, completed an incredible total of 56,000 laps and covered more than 105,000 miles – almost enough to lap the globe five times,

    without a single fault.

And remember, this is not conventional fast road use: this is a punishing circuit racing environment, notoriously hard on cars, but obviously not an issue for Subaru’s legendary Impreza.

Created with demolishing the gruelling special stages of world rallying in mind, the All- Wheel Drive, turbocharged Impreza is obviously equally at home on the circuit – making it the ideal ‘weekend warrior’ track day tool, as well as a practical, reliable, affordable daily driver. It’s a true race-car for the road.

Rodney Gooch, Sales & Marketing Director, Castle Combe Circuit, said: “We are extremely proud to have this unique relationship with Subaru, and we see having the latest Type UK STI as an accolade. <![CDATA[SUBARU: THE PERFECT CHOICE OF WINTER WARRIOR]]> With the UK in the grip of another classically dark, wet, icy and grim winter and the roads in a slippery state of perpetual mud, leaves, frost and black ice, there’s never been a better time to make full use of Subaru’s legendary symmetrical All-Wheel Drive transmission – the perfect antidote to the woeful winter weather.

Subaru’s quick-thinking, full-time AWD transmission splits power 50:50 front to rear; enhancing straight-line traction (even with up to 330bhp/346lbft on tap, as in the exciting new Impreza 330S) and providing sure-footed grip and traction through corners, whatever the weather; allowing the driver to make safe, swift progress, day in, day out.

On a typically slippery British Winter road, grip is at a premium. But Subaru’s “Subaglue” permanent All-Wheel Drive – with state-of-the-art Vehicle Dynamics Control, intelligent AWD differentials and super-grippy chassis and set-up – will find you traction, where a 2WD car would be slipping and sliding, leaving the driver in a panic, or worse. As a Subaru driver, even in hard rain, snow or icy conditions, all you will be aware of while you make steady progress, is less understeer or oversteer, as the tried-and-tested, highly evolved symmetrical AWD does its job reassuringly. With Subaru’s full-time AWD, you can relax and drive with assurance, and grip – even during these dismal winter days.

<![CDATA[SUBARU’S FIRST FAMILY FAN CLUB]]> Could father and son, Steve and Ian Brown, be Subaru’s first family fan club?

Sussex-based dealer, Culverwells thinks so, and with them both taking delivery of a Subaru Impreza WRX STI 330S, their passion for the latest special-edition, new-shape Subaru Impreza STI is plain to see.

Introduced to the brand by his Subaru-enthusiast son (43) who had previously owned several WRXs and a WR1, Insurance Claims Adjuster, Steve (69) decided to give the Impreza 2.5 WRX STI 330S a chance after it was announced at the British Motor Show in July.

An irrepressible Impreza fan, son Ian said: “I have always been impressed by their reliability, bullet-proof build quality and unfettered raw power, and made it my mission to convert my father, although on this occasion he was three months ahead of me. The service my father received at Culverwells was impeccable, and when combined with the lure of the all-new Impreza 330S, I just couldn’t resist making a purchase myself.”

Benefiting from a Prodrive Performance pack with modified ECU and exhaust system, power goes up on the Impreza WRX STI 330S to a staggering 330 PS at only 5,400 rpm compared to the 300.5 PS at 6,000 rpm of the standard model. Top speed is the same 155.3 mph but the 0-60 mph time drops from an already swift 4.8 seconds to only 4.4 seconds.

Upgrades include leather-covered Recaro front seats, satellite navigation, Smart-entry, push-button start and new special-edition sports new five-spoke 18x8.5 ins alloy wheels wearing 245/40 R18 tyres.

Dealer Principal, Richard Cole, said: “Both Steve and Ian are real performance-car enthusiasts and extremely knowledgeable, and therefore difficult to please. But with all the extra kit available as standard, the Impreza WRX STI 330S came as a natural choice.”

  • Subaru’s widely-acclaimed new Boxer Diesel engine is now available in the new Forester where it is expected to account for 80 per cent of sales and eventually turn the SUV into Subaru’s best-selling model.

First introduced in the Legacy and Outback this February, the 2.0 litre, four-cylinder horizontally-opposed Boxer Diesel engine offers outstanding refinement and throttle-response plus exceptional handling thanks to its light weight and low centre-of gravity.

And in the new Boxer Diesel Forester – itself only launched in April in petrol format – the boxer diesel catapults it to the top of the class for fuel economy and low emissions. It also offers drivers the longest range of any SUV at more than 1,000 km before refuelling.

No other competitor can match the new Forester 2.0D X’s Combined 44.8 mpg nor its ultra-low 167 g/km meaning an annual Road Fund Licence of £170.

In addition, only the VW Tiguan can match the Group 9E insurance rating for the Forester 2.0D X and XC models. The Honda CR-V, for example is Group 12, Nissan X-Trail from Group 13 and Toyota RAV4 is classed from Group11 upwards.

Meanwhile, the Boxer Diesel Forester’s 115.5 mph top speed and 10 second 0-60 mph time makes it one of the swiftest of SUVs while the extra engine torque over the petrol model allows a full 2,000 kg braked towing limit.

Apart from the much-applauded new engine, key improvements over the 2.0 litre petrol Forester include a new six-speed manual gearbox, uprated front suspension and firmer-feeling steering.

Commenting on the new Boxer Diesel Forester, Lawrence Good, Managing Director, Subaru (UK) Limited said: “This is the car everyone has been waiting for and places us right in the SUV heartland where it leads in so many crucial areas.

“With the praise already heaped on the new Boxer Diesel as fitted to the Legacy and the favourable comments on the new Forester’s improved space, ride and handling, this should be the perfect combination for both loyal Subaru owners and conquest customers.”

SUV In Size But Subaru-Like To Drive

Even more the keen driver’s choice, the new Forester launched this April is Subaru’s third generation of crossover SUVs but now occupies a similar silhouette to the Toyota RAV4, Nissan X-Trail or Honda CR-V.

Based on the platform of the new Impreza, the Forester features a new multi-link rear suspension, fuel-saving electric power steering and Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control.

Now closer in size to its less agile SUV competitors, the completely new Forester is 75 mm longer, 45 mm wider and gains 110 mm in height (all models except the 2.0D X which lacks roof rails).

Rear legroom grows by 95 mm, the driver’s eye-line is 30 mm higher, while the load space is now 450 litres with the rear seat up – 63 litres more than the previous model.

But while the ground clearance is now 10 mm greater at 215 mm, the engine itself sits 10 mm lower. This, coupled with the inherent low centre-of-gravity of the boxer engine, gives exceptionally agile handling.

    Equipment And Design

The new Boxer Diesel Forester offers outstanding equipment with even the entry-level Forester 2.0D X featuring: symmetrical all-wheel drive; Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control; self-levelling rear suspension; fuel-saving electric power steering; front, side and curtain airbags and 16 x 6.5 ins alloy wheels with 215/65 tyres.

Other features include four electric windows; 60/40-split rear seats with reclining back-rests; climate-control air-conditioning; radio/CD player; front fog lamps; vehicle information display; height and reach-adjustment steering wheel; leather-covered steering wheel, handbrake and gear-lever; heated front seats, mirrors and windscreen wipers plus cruise-control.

Expected to be the best-seller, the Forester 2.0D XC adds: roof-rails; larger, 17x 7.0 ins alloy wheels with 225/55 tyres; premium audio system featuring a six-stacker CD-player and seven speakers; roof spoiler; HID headlamps and a large, electrically-powered sun-roof.

Finally, the top-of-the range Forester 2.0D XSn adds: satellite navigation with single disc CD/radio; leather seats; electrically-powered driver’s seat and Smart-entry with push-button start.

Other premium touches shared by all Foresters include a gas strut-assisted bonnet, flowing fascia design, double-stitched seat cloth, metallic interior decoration and padded armrest cushions.

The instruments are also sporty thanks to their clear design and subtle lighting while the extensive vehicle information display includes a fuel consumption indicator highlighting the new Forester’s much improved efficiency.

Now, much more SUV-like in appearance, the new Forester boasts a clean, chiselled appearance with multi-grooved wheel-arches, hawk-eye headlamps and aggressive bumpers. Thought has even been given to the chunky exterior door handles which have deep recesses to allow winter glove-wearers an easier grip.

    Boxer Diesel Secrets Explained

    • Exceptionally compact, light and strong
    • Low friction ‘Boxer’ balance cancels out vibration
    • Flat four’s low centre-of-gravity boosts handling agility
    • Punchy throttle response
    • Common-rail fuel-injection for greater efficiency
    • Solenoid injectors for compactness
    • Variable-vane turbocharger mounted under engine for low centre-of-gravity
    • Highly efficient, fast-warm catalytic converter also mounted under engine

Dedicated to the horizontally-opposed ‘boxer’ engine layout for over 40 years, Subaru engineers were determined to use this format for their first diesel engine.

The reasons were to create a light, compact, strong unit with reduced vibration, noise and internal friction compared to an in-line engine and for an ultra-low centre-of gravity.

This enhances handling agility and roadholding – especially when combined with Subaru’s renowned symmetrical all-wheel drive system.

The entire engine and transmission are not only mounted very low down but also within the wheelbase which further boosts chassis dynamics.

And with a minimum 45 kg weight increase over the 2.0 litre petrol engine, the boxer diesel actually lowers the centre-of-gravity.

    Cancelled Out Vibration

The 2.0 litre Boxer Diesel has a class-leading light weight with the horizontally-opposed pistons effectively cancelling out the secondary harmonic vibration (vibration with twice the frequencies of the engine speed).

The crankshaft is short and highly rigid, minimising the vibrational noise of many diesel engines.

And the superior balance of the horizontally-opposed engine means internal rotational inertia and friction are drastically reduced compared with an in-line engine.

Reduced internal friction means throttle response is exceptionally lively and in keeping with Subaru’s sporty heritage.

Compared to Subaru’s 2.0 litre petrol engine fitted to the Impreza, Legacy and Forester, the 2.0 litre Boxer Diesel has a 11 mm longer stroke and 6 mm smaller bore for a capacity of 1,998 cc versus 1,994 cc.

    Even More Compact

Thanks to a bore pitch shortened from 113 mm to 98.4 mm, the overall engine block length is only 353.5 mm compared to the petrol’s already compact 414.8 mm.

The block is of a rigid semi-closed deck design, while all five main bearings in the alloy cylinder block use metal composite supports for added strength and durability. It also enhances refinement, providing a similar thermal expansion to that of the crankshaft.

Extra water-cooling slits have been added between the cylinder bores and the high-strength pistons are squirted with oil to enhance cooling. The large big ends of the connecting rods feature an asymmetrical profile for assembly precision and reduced friction.

The high-strength crankshaft has a special surface treatment to withstand the diesel engine’s high combustion pressures while the uprated cylinder heads have roller rocker arms. In addition, the cam-drive is via a chain system that better handles the variations in torque of a diesel engine.

    Advanced Fuel-Injection And Turbocharger

The new Boxer Diesel uses an advanced common-rail fuel-injection system with the fuel being pressurised at 180 MPa before being fed into the common rail. This maximises efficiency, both in terms of power, fuel consumption and emissions.

Special, short-length solenoid injectors ensure the engine’s width is no greater than that of the 2.0 litre ‘boxer’ petrol unit, despite the diesel’s longer piston stroke.

The variable nozzle turbocharger ensures the correct boost throughout the engine’s rev-range and its low centre-of gravity position under the engine and close to the catalytic converters increases environmental performance.

The Boxer Diesel meets Euro4 emission standards thanks to oxidation catalytic converters and a particulate filter.

A new feature for the Forester is a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). This reduces PM (Particulate Matter) – the cause of black smoke – to the minimum.

Class-Challenging Performance. Class-Leading Economy And Emissions

The new Boxer Diesel provides class-challenging performance thanks to its 147 PS at an ultra-low 3,600 rpm and a massive 258 lb ft torque at an accessible 1,800 rpm.

With a ‘square’ bore and stroke of 86 mm and 16.3:1 compression ratio, the world’s first Boxer Diesel provides effortless performance throughout a wide speed range, avoiding the breathless response of some diesels at high revs.

Top speed and the 0-60 mph times are among the best in the compact SUV class at 115.5 mph and 10 seconds while – even more importantly – in-gear flexibility leaves most competitors trailing thanks to strong mid-range torque and the carefully-chosen ratios of the new six-speed manual gearbox.

Fuel economy in the Forester 2.0D X is class-leading at 39.2/48.7 and 44.8 mpg while the Forester 2.0D XC and XSn are not far behind at 38.2/47.9 and 44.1 mpg. Their CO2 emission figures are equally impressive at 167 and 170 g/km respectively.

And to best exploit this new-found frugality, the Boxer Diesel Forester’s fuel tank is enlarged from 60 to 64 litres compared to the petrol models, giving it the longest range in its class before requiring refuelling at 1,000 km-plus. (Note: The new Boxer Diesel Forester has 3 PS less than the Legacy/Outback because of reduced cooling air travelling through the bonnet air intake.)

    New Six-Speed Manual Gearbox

The new Boxer Diesel Forester boasts a new six-speed manual gearbox with optimised ratios for quiet, refined high-speed cruising and flexible low-speed manoeuvres.

For example, 6th is slightly higher than 5th on the Legacy and Outback Boxer Diesels at 31.5 mph/1,000 rpm for the Forester 2.0D X while 1st is lower at 5.1 mph/1,000 rpm.

This new six-speed gearbox employs a cable change – a system becoming increasingly popular. Apart from giving a consistent feel, cables isolate transmission and engine vibration, enhancing refinement.

    Symmetrical All Wheel-Drive Uprated

As with previous models, the Forester enjoys Subaru’s acclaimed full-time all-wheel drive transmission.

In addition, all new Foresters benefit from Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control as standard.

This advanced system uses sophisticated sensors to detect side-to-side and front-to- rear slip plus sudden steering movements. It controls oversteer/understeer and potential loss of control by braking individual wheels and cutting engine revs – all in milliseconds.

The Forester’s quick-thinking full-time AWD system splits power 50/50 front to rear. However, as soon as slip is detected, the centre differential with its viscous-coupling distributes torque to the axle with the most grip. This happens in milliseconds.

    Passenger And Pedestrian Safety Boost

Both occupants and pedestrians are well protected by the new Forester thanks to a whole series of safety measures aimed at achieving the highest standards of both occupant and pedestrian safety.

Curtain and side airbags are now fitted to all models together with driver and passenger airbags. The front seatbelts have pre-tensioners, anti-whiplash front head restraints are standard and the front seats have energy-absorbing backs.

The brake pedal is energy-absorbing, being designed to snap away under severe impact, protecting the driver’s lower limbs. In the rear seat are two ISOFIX-compatible child seat mountings.

The passenger airbag is dual-stage which provides progressive protection matched to the severity of the impact and the standard anti-lock brakes (ABS) come with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD). This juggles the braking force between front and rear wheels according to load shifts during deceleration. Unlike the previous model, the new Forester has front ventilated disc brakes and solid rear discs.

High tensile steel of varying thickness is used extensively throughout the body, providing good crushability where needed while protecting the passenger area.

Not only does the elimination of the previous Forester’s front subframe reduce body weight by 20 kg but the new structure better dissipates front impact forces.

Much careful thought has been given to enhance pedestrian protection. Because the Forester is higher than a car, more space has been made between the bonnet and catch, while the bonnet itself has been designed to spread impact load over its entire surface.

The rear of the bonnet compresses easily and the cowl ahead of the windscreen is designed to dissipate collision energy.

A new shock-absorbing plate has been installed ahead of the front bumper beam to reduce pedestrian leg injuries. This new design meets European pedestrian safety regulations while retaining the off-road approach angle expected of an SUV.

    Outstanding Ride Plus Driver-Focussed Handling

A sophisticated all-wheel drive system coupled with low-friction, long travel four-wheel independent suspension and low-centre of gravity ‘boxer’ engines have all contributed to the Forester’s reputation for outstanding chassis dynamics – far removed from conventional SUVs.

Now for the new model, Subaru has devised a completely new platform with a 90 mm longer wheelbase, tracks widened by 35 mm front and 45 mm rear and a sophisticated multi-link, double wishbone rear suspension.

In addition, to further improve handling and roadholding, the position of the ‘boxer’ engine has been dropped by 10 mm, lowering the centre of gravity still further.

Other changes include a new fuel-saving electric power steering system with more rigid mounting and new design of MacPherson strut front suspension.

The result is a highly-absorbent ride with precise geometry control for accurate straight-line running over uneven road surfaces backed by extremely responsive steering and handling.

The rear multi-link, double wishbone suspension liberates more luggage space thanks to its compactness compared to the previous rear strut arrangement.

And because it is attached to a sub frame via bushes, with the mounting section moved to under the floor itself, road noise is reduced.

The rear springs and shock-absorbers are mounted behind the centre-line of the rear wheels, with the wheel stroke itself moving rearwards – all helping ride comfort. A rear anti-roll bar is standard.

Like all previous Foresters, the rear suspension features self-levelling which aids stability when laden and ensures a constant ground clearance – now a substantial 215 mm – 10 mm greater than before.

At the front, the previous sub frame has been eliminated, saving 20 kg in body weight yet a new box-section for the front cross-member provides the same level of rigidity.

The new MacPherson strut and anti-roll bar layout is based on that used by the highly-praised Legacy and new Impreza. It offers high lateral rigidity which improves steering response and cornering stability.

This is further enhanced by an especially rigid mounting for the steering rack and the positioning of the steering gearbox and electric motor below the rack for a more consistent feel. Furthermore, special suspension bushes and attachment points reduce road shock.

The steering gear ratio has been changed for a sportier feel while the rack diameter is increased from 23 to 26 mm. The result is a more linear feel to steering inputs.

And for the new Boxer Diesel Forester the front damping has been firmed up together with the steering to sharpen handling and compensate for the 45 kg increase in engine weight.

Wheel and tyre sizes have been optimised for the new Forester’s chassis and anticipated all-terrain use.

    The Forester 2.0D X features 16 x 6.5 ins alloy wheels with 215/65 R 16 tyres while the Forester 2.0D XC and XSn have 17 x 7.0 ins alloy wheels with 225/55 R 17 tyres.

Both the new Forester SUV and Impreza five-door will be unveiled featuring Subaru’s highly-acclaimed new 2.0 litre Boxer Diesel engine.

The world’s first horizontally-opposed diesel engine for a passenger car has won widespread praise for its refinement, smoothness, sharp throttle-response and outstanding fuel economy. It first appeared in the Legacy and Outback earlier this year.

Both the Forester and Impreza Boxer Diesels feature new six-speed manual gearboxes while the engine itself benefits from a new closed-type diesel particulate filter.

Such is the efficiency of the new engine that the Forester 2.0D boasts class-leading fuel economy and emissions.

No other SUV can better the 44.8 mpg Combined and 167 g/km of the Forester 2.0D X.

The Forester 2.0D produces 147 PS and 258 lb ft torque and the Impreza 150 PS and 258 lb ft – both at 3,600 rpm and 1,800 rpm respectively.

The engine’s benefits include exceptional compactness, light weight and a low centre-of-gravity which benefits handling agility and makes best use of the standard all-wheel drive system.

The new Forester Boxer Diesel goes on sale in the UK in late September and the Impreza Boxer Diesel in January 2009.

<![CDATA[MICROCAR RALLY VICTORY FOR UK SUBARU TEAM]]> Four UK Subaru fans have returned home victorious after putting the manufacturer’s original model, the 360cc microcar, to the ultimate test - a 2,000-mile rally through some of Europe’s toughest terrain including Italy’s Stelvio and Gavia Passes.

And not only did the ‘Liege-Brescia-Liege’ rally commemorate the 50th anniversary of the original but also the 50th anniversary of the launch of Subaru of Japan’s first passenger car.

It is the world’s only International rally for sub-500cc cars and attracted over 75 entrants, some of whom successfully travelled through Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy and Slovenia.

However, unlike in 1958, the July 11-20 event covered 10 days instead of the non-stop three of the original, traffic congestion and posterior protection being to blame.

The UK’s fearless Subaru foursome are classic car restorer and seasoned historic rally driver, James Ewing and his Designer partner Jane Puttock from Haslemere, Surrey.

They scooped 1st prize in the ‘Under 425 Class’ plus ‘Best Lady Driver’ for Jane. In addition, James and Jane came 6th in the ‘Spirit 400 Class’.

The drivers of the second Subaru 360 were Managing Director, Victor Sayer from Finchampstead near Reading and Craig Lawson from Farnborough, Hampshire who is in the motor trade.

Victor and Craig came 2nd in the ‘Under 425 Class’ and 8th in the ‘Spirit 400 Class’.

Both cars are from the 1967 and 1968 model years and are powered by two-cylinder, air-cooled two-stroke engines mounted in the rear and producing a dizzying 20 PS each – less than some single-seater petrol lawnmowers.

The newer car has a four-speed gearbox and the older a three-speed – both without synchromesh on first gear. Cruising speed is about 50 mph – on the flat, of course.

Modifications are minor but include radial tyres, up-rated shock-absorbers and overhauled brakes.

Other cars in this year’s ‘Liege-Brescia-Liege’ rally included Italy’s Fiat 500, France’s Citroën 2CV, Germany’s Messerschmitt, Heinkel and BMW Isetta Bubble Cars and Britain’s Bond and Berkley Minicars.

<![CDATA[SUBARU BOXERS SUPPORT TOP CYCLISTS]]> A crack-squad of Subaru ‘boxers’ have just completed a special mission – lending support to the UK’s top amateur cyclists in the gruelling ‘London-Paris Cycle Tour 2008’.

The fleet of Boxer Diesel Legacy Sports Tourer and Outback models were among the official Subaru back-up cars in the 600 km ride which raises money for charity.

Billed as ‘The Professional event for Amateurs’, the three-day tour started at London’s Hampton Court and ended at the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

In between it took in the classic Paris-Roubaix stage – better known as ‘The Hell Of The North’ because of its demanding cobbles.

Subaru is no stranger to cycling sponsorship having provided support vehicles for Lance Armstrong’s US Postal squad in the 1990s as well as this year backing the French Pro-Tour outfit, ‘Bouygues Telecom’.

Launched earlier this year, Subaru’s first diesel engine has won widespread praise for its refinement, performance and outstanding fuel economy. It is called a ‘boxer’ because of its horizontally-opposed pistons which move in and out like the fists of two boxers.

This layout allows the engine to sit lower in the car, providing a lower centre-of-gravity for enhanced handling and roadholding.

  • Forester 2.0X and XS petrol manual automatic available from April
  • A completely new Forester goes on sale in April offering more space, a smoother ride, greater ground clearance yet even more agile handling, fully justifying Subaru’s adherence to the low centre-of-gravity ‘boxer’ engine and all-wheel drive system which has made the brand famous.

Even more the keen driver’s choice, the new Forester is Subaru’s third generation of crossover SUVs but now occupies a similar silhouette to the Toyota RAV4, Nissan X-Trail or Honda CR-V.

Based on the platform of the new Impreza, the Forester features a new multi-link rear suspension, fuel-saving electric power steering, standard Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control, self-levelling rear suspension, engine efficiency improvements and a revised automatic transmission offering ‘normal’, ‘sports’ or ‘manual’ mode.

Now closer in size to its less agile SUV competitors, the completely new Forester is 75 mm longer, 45 mm wider and gains 110 mm in height.

Rear legroom grows by 95 mm, the driver’s eye-line is 30 mm higher, while the load space is now 450 litres with the rear seat up – 63 litres more than the previous model.

It also enjoys enhanced fuel economy and driveability thanks to an improved 2.0 litre petrol ‘boxer’ engine which – having its cylinders horizontally-opposed – gives the car a lower centre of gravity for improved grip, reduced body roll and more precise steering response.

This is further aided by the engine and transmission now being placed 10 mm lower in the platform.

Launched in Japan on December 25 last year, the completely new Forester found 4,285 customers in the first 30-plus days of going on sale – 2,000 more then expected – while January registrations were 136 per cent up on the previous year.

    Equipment And Design

The new Forester boasts outstanding equipment with even the entry-level Forester 2.0X featuring: symmetrical all-wheel drive; Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control; self-levelling rear suspension; fuel-saving electric power steering; front, side and curtain airbags; four electric windows; 60/40-split rear seats with reclining back-rests; climate-control airconditioning; radio/CD player; front fog lamps; vehicle information display; height and reach-adjustment steering wheel; heated front seats, mirrors and windscreen wipers plus cruise-control. Manual models feature a dual-range transmission.

The higher-spec Forester 2.0XS adds: alloy wheels; leather seats, steering wheel, gearlever and handbrake; premium audio system featuring a six-stacker CD-player and seven speakers; HID headlamps; sun-roof; electrically-powered driver’s seat; retractable rear seat tray with cup-holder; engine starter button and ‘smart’ entry.

Other premium touches include a gas strut-assisted bonnet, flowing fascia design, doublestitched seat cloth, metallic interior decoration and padded armrest cushions.

New 2.0 Litre Engine In Detail

The new Forester 2.0X and XS enjoy substantial revisions to their 2.0 litre ‘boxer’ engines which result in stronger low and mid-range pulling power, enhanced flexibility and improved fuel economy with lower exhaust emissions.

Power is now 150 PS at 6,000 rpm while torque is 7.4 lb ft (10 Nm) greater, recording 144.6 lb ft at 3,200 rpm.

The result is an improvement of more than 3 mpg on the Combined cycle for the automatic, with exhaust emissions down by 21 g/km.

Urban/Extra Urban and Combined fuel consumption are now 25.2/40.9 and 33.6 mpg for the Forester 2.0 X and XS automatic with a CO2 reading of 199 g/km.

This compares favourably with the petrol automatic competition. The new Forester is 4 mpg better than the Nissan X-Trail and 2 mpg ahead of the Toyota RAV4 while emitting significantly less CO2.

The 0-60 mph is 12.3 seconds with a maximum speed of 115 mph while improved torque allows higher gearing for improved refinement and economy with no sacrifice in engine response.

Manual versions of the new Forester show similar improvements with Urban/Extra Urban and Combined figures of 25.9/40.4 and 33.6 mpg with a low CO2 rating of 198 g/km. Top speed for the manual Forester is 114 mph with a 0-60 mph time of 10.6 seconds.

The new Forester features twin overhead camshafts per bank (DOHC), four valves per cylinder and an Active Valve Control System (AVCS) which is a form of variable valve timing. This enhances both low-speed torque and high-rev power.

In addition, the combustion chambers have been redesigned for increased tumble gas flow for reduced fuel consumption. Also for improved efficiency are a revised intake system, cooling system and catalytic converters.

The new 2.0 litre four-cam ‘boxer’ engine retains the same 92 mm bore and 75 mm stroke as before but with a lower 10.2:1 compression ratio.

    Improved Automatic Transmission

The new Forester’s four-speed automatic transmission provides smoother changes with greater sensitivity to the driver’s wishes.

It is more efficient, saving fuel, because a slip lock-up device reduces wasted engine revs. In addition, advanced electronics – linked to an electronic throttle – match engine speed with the best gear for any given situation.

A new feature is ‘Sports Shift’ which allows the driver to select from ‘normal’, ‘sports’ or ‘manual’ control, allowing him or her to ‘tap-shift’ gears at will.

As with previous models, the full-time all-wheel drive transmission features a 60/40 Active Torque-Split on the automatic. However, the split varies according to changing conditions.

Both automatic and manual versions of the new Forester now benefit from Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control as standard.

This advanced system uses sophisticated sensors to detect side to side and front to rear slip plus sudden steering movements. It controls oversteer/understeer and potential loss of control by braking individual wheels and cutting engine revs – all in milliseconds.

    Slicker-Shifting Manual

Manual models benefit from a slicker-shifting gearchange with both lighter movements and reduced internal friction which improves fuel consumption.

As with previous models, dual-range transmission is standard on manual cars providing, effectively, 10 speeds. Dual range is selected by depressing the clutch and raising a small lever next to the gear-shift. This can be done on the move.

Low-ratio advantages include extra control through enhanced engine braking in slippery conditions. This could be while driving down a snow-lined street littered with abandoned cars or while pulling a caravan off a rain-soaked field.

The Forester’s quick-thinking full-time AWD system on manual models splits power 50/50 front to rear. However, as soon as slip is detected, the centre differential, with its viscouscoupling, distributes torque to the axle with the most grip.

The new MacPherson strut and anti-roll bar layout is based on that used by the highlypraised Legacy and new Impreza.

Wheel and tyre sizes have been optimised for the new Forester’s chassis and anticipated all-terrain use.

The Forester 2.0X features 16 x 6.5 ins steel wheels with alloy look trims while the Forester 2.0XS has alloy wheels in the same size. Both models feature 215/65 R16 tyres.

    Generous Warranty

All Foresters marketed by Subaru (UK) Limited come with the reassurance of a three year or 60,000 mile warranty plus 12 year anti-corrosion cover and three year paintwork warranty.

This is in addition to three years’ membership of Subaru Assistance – a comprehensive home and roadside repair and recovery package throughout the UK and Europe administered by Mondial Assistance. Service intervals are 12,000 miles or one year – whichever arrives first.

<![CDATA[‘I’M NO BOY RACER’ SAYS SEPTUAGENARIAN SCOOBY FAN]]> Could 77-year-old Ron Billingham be Subaru’s oldest and most loyal Impreza turbo fan?

Berkshire dealer, Bulldog of Twyford thinks so and with Ron taking delivery of the latest new-shape Impreza WRX STI Type UK – his sixth sporty Subaru – there seems every chance he could hold the title.

The sprightly septuagenarian who regularly canoes and occasionally cycles is one of the first new owners of the iconic performance flagship – now with a 300 PS ‘boxer’ engine giving a theoretical 155 mph top speed and 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds.

He has previously owned limited edition Imprezas such as the ‘WR1’ and the ‘RB320’ in memory of the late rally ace Richard Burns, also from Reading like Ron.

Other favourites include both 2.0 and 2.5 litre versions of the Impreza WRX – complete with Prodrive Performance Packs, of course, just for that little extra zip.

He has also owned a Legacy 3.0 litre spec.B Sports Tourer but found it lacked the Impreza’s response – despite its 245 PS six cylinder ‘boxer’ engine.

The retired Managing Director of a furniture design and installation company who has also owned Mercedes-Benz and Porsches said: “I’m no boy racer, mind, but have been in the past. The new STI is so much smoother-riding and refined but still goes when you want it to. Your mum could drive it to the shops with no problems yet when you select ‘Super Sharp’ mode it’s like lighting the afterburner.”

A keen motorsport fan, Ron has visited Prodrive’s HQ in Banbury and hopes to visit a rally stage this year, especially when his new-shape Impreza is competing in WRC format.

Meanwhile, Bulldog Twyford Sales Manager, Gary Moores, said: “Ron is very knowledgeable about Subarus and a pleasure to deal with. He is an inspiration to us all.”

The totally new Impreza WRX STI Type UK boasts an upgraded symmetrical all-wheel drive system with even more driver-selectable handling characteristics. It also has three different engine-response modes.

Renowned for their space, refinement and cosseting ride, 17 Tribecas will be used to shuttle hotel guests from airports and railway stations to and from De Vere hotel and leisure locations.

The all-wheel drive Subaru flagships will also provide transport during major golfing events such as the Ladies Scottish Open at Cameron House from April 28 until May 3 and the PGA Seniors at Slaley Hall, Northumberland from August 21 until 24.

Commenting on the deal, Subaru (UK) Limited National Fleet Manager, Alan Able, said: “This high-profile association is a perfect fit for us. A ride in a Tribeca provides an extension of the De Vere luxury treatment and places us on the shopping lists of potential customers.”

The Tribeca features a 3.0 litre 245 PS six-cylinder horizontally-opposed engine, five-speed automatic gearbox and full-time symmetrical all-wheel drive and Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control (SVDC).

The Subaru Tribeca is available in two 5-seat trim levels comprising 3.0 S5 and 3.0 SE5 and one 7-seat luxury-spec version, the 3.0SE7.

Standard equipment for all models includes dual-zone air-conditioning, eight-way powered front seats, front, side and curtain airbags, six-disc CD auto-changer with nine speakers and MP3 playback and a leather-covered steering wheel with remote audio controls.

Named after a fashionable part of New York, the US-built Tribeca scored an outstanding 5-stars for both front and side crash-protection by America’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) – the maximum achievable.

In addition, the Tribeca performed with distinction in the tough roll-over tests, earning four stars and achieving a low 16 per cent chance of rolling over and a ‘No-tip’ dynamic test result.

This compares with an average 30 per cent chance of overturning among all US-market SUVs and a range of between 12 and 19 per cent for passenger cars.
