The Subaru Legacy offers that otherwise unattainable balance of a usefully long and easily accessible load deck, in an estate car that has been designed from the inside out. By their very nature, estate cars are compromising vehicles but Subaru has ensured that Legacy meets both family and business needs to perfection.
Mating the all-wheel-drive safety competence, for which Subaru is renowned, with the convenience of a spacious and accommodating load- carrying body actually reduces the compromises but enhances all-round performance capabilities. The Legacy responds to tailored needs for a more practical, modern and usable mode of transport.

Flexible, adaptable, versatile and ready to accommodate whatever challenges you may direct at it, the Subaru Legacy provides an expanded cargo-handling capacity, which means you can depend on it to carry whatever your lifestyle demands. From the shopping-bag hooks down to the make-life-easier, one-finger releases for its 60/40 split-folding and reclining rear seats and under-floor storage, the Legacy will help you obtain the maximum benefit from every motoring experience.

The Legacy’s retractable cargo cover keeps luggage out of view and away from sunlight. With lightweight yet sturdy aluminium construction, the cover can be removed readily to make way for bulkier loads, or when the one-touch 60/40 split rear seats are folded down flat to accommodate longer items.

The Legacy elevates the inherent advantages of its signature Subaru layout, balance, composure and response, with the Subaru Dynamic Chassis Control Concept. The body uses high-tensile steel in critical areas to achieve high strength with light weight. A rigid new Cradle Mount front-end structure delivers a more accurate, natural steering feel whilst allowing the engine and suspension to be more effectively isolated from the cabin for a smoother, quieter ride. The result is more of everything that makes driving a pleasure: giving confidence with comfort, sportiness with safety, and elegance with efficiency, all in perfect balance.
Symmetrical AWD![]()
Since introducing permanent Symmetrical All Wheel Drive in 1972, Subaru has continually advanced its technology to meet the evolving needs of drivers around the world. A Subaru is engineered to deliver the best possible traction and stability through its AWD, with its engine and drivetrain in a symmetrical, straight-line layout. Power is routed to all four wheels simply and directly, for perfect balance and an innate sense of control.
The rigidly mounted suspension, lower centre of gravity and standard Vehicle Dynamics Control work in concert to provide crisp cornering, along with clear communication between the driver and the road.
Rough Road
Designed to optimise tyre contact and provide generous wheel travel, the rigidly mounted yet luxuriously compliant suspension has been proven on some of the world’s most challenging roads.

The refined, low-friction 4-wheel independent suspension and rigid body structure minimise the transmission of vibration and noise from the road to the passenger cabin, for a smooth, quiet ride.
The Symmetrical AWD, Vehicle Dynamics Control and precise independent suspension team up to optimise how the tyre responds to the road, to make the most of available traction.

The strut type front suspension is mounted to a highly rigid Cradle Mount System, and features a wider track and longer wheel travel. Together they deliver flatter cornering as well as a quieter, more comfortable ride over a variety of road surfaces.

Expertly balancing sporty handling with refinement, the new double wishbone rear suspension handles rough roads and sharp corners with poise and precision. To minimise noise and vibration in the cabin, all suspension links and the rear differential are rubber- isolated from their rigid subframe, which is further insulated from the body by larger rubber mounts.

The Subaru Boxer power unit is engineered in a horizontally-opposed design that creates a powerful ‘punch-counterpunch’ action, with its pistons. This motion creates a natural balance for exceptional smoothness, because it’s inherently rigid for higher strength and provides a lower centre of gravity that guarantees more faithful and nuance-free handling.
With its horizontally-opposed configuration, the Subaru Boxer engine lies flatter in the frame and sits lower than engine designs considered to be more conventional. Presented with a lower centre of gravity for the entire vehicle, the driver enjoys a more balanced and even cornering stance, which is highly flattering.
Throughout the rev range the engine delivers immediate, responsive power smoothly and efficiently. The pistons lie ’flat’ and work in opposition to each other to reduce vibrations. In turn, this makes the Legacy’s drive as smoothly compliant and comfortable as it is exciting to engage with.
Whether you are negotiating a road in bad weather or reacting to avoid an incident, Symmetrical AWD is designed to deliver exceptional traction at all times and, therefore, it imparts extraordinary confidence to the driver and passengers, by ensuring that all four wheels have a positive and consistent drive.

Standard in every new Subaru Legacy, Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) monitors and analyses the vehicle’s intended course via an array of sensors. If the vehicle approaches the limits of stability, the AWD torque distribution, engine output and brakes at each wheel are adjusted to assist in keeping the vehicle on course.
In a corner or while making an evasive manoeuvre, Vehicle Dynamics Control compares the driver's intentions with the vehicle's actual movements, based on both steering and braking, as well as the lateral acceleration and yaw (rotational forces) inherent at the time. The system then adjusts engine output and braking of individual wheels, as needed, to assist in keeping the car close to its intended original course.

Many of the same features, which make the Legacy so rewarding to drive, also contribute to keeping its occupants out of harm’s way. The lower centre of gravity of its Subaru Boxer engine enhances the stable, responsive handling of its Symmetrical AWD. Its standard Vehicle Dynamics Control and generous dimensions of the brakes endow it with athletically responsive reflexes, while the added precision of a Cradle Mount System for its suspension and steering equip the driver for excellent evasive abilities. This is all because Subaru believes that the best way to survive a collision is not to have one in the first place.
Even with the most advanced active safety systems, sometimes an incident is simply unavoidable. The Legacy is designed to protect its occupants with a series of advanced systems and features, balancing inherent structural rigidity with controlled deformation in key areas, to better manage impact forces. The Cradle Mount System for its engine and front suspension effectively lengthens the front crumple zone. Each side door incorporates two side-impact protection beams. A comprehensive suite of air bags, whiplash-reducing front seats, retracting pedals and 3-point seat belts help protect occupants directly. It’s a core value of the Subaru philosophy that peace of mind is the first step in providing driving enjoyment.
The Legacy was designed with the objective of providing a high level of pedestrian protection in the event of a collision. Shock absorbing space between the bonnet and engine helps to reduce pedestrian injury in an incident, as do an energy absorbing front bumper and a specially designed area around the windscreen wipers. Yet, the space-conscious ‘Boxer’ engine also allows a greater safety space between the bonnet underside and itself, which does not conflict with its smart styling.
The standard 4-wheel disc brakes include lightweight aluminium rear callipers and a redesigned booster for a more reassuring brake-pedal feel, along with a 4-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). Electronic Brake-force Distribution reapportions front to rear braking pressure, regardless of how the vehicle is loaded. Brake Assist provides greater force in sudden, emergency braking, even if the driver neither brakes hard nor soon enough. Subaru’s Hill Holder Assist helps prevent rollback when starting off on a 5% or steeper gradient, by applying the electronic parking brake and releasing it again automatically, once you're underway.
The Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frames strengthen the passenger cabin from the roof to the doors, pillars and floor. This first-class design helps to divert and dissipate impact energy away from the occupants in the event of a collision. The front crumple zone is integral to the frame, while the cradle mounting for the engine and front suspension is designed to help keep those components further from the passenger compartment in the event of a frontal impact.
Standard on the Legacy are front airbags, plus front-side and curtain airbags. Height-adjustable front seat belts feature pretensioners to hold occupants securely in place, while load limiters ease the peak forces to the chest. In a rear collision, the front seats use new, more rigid frames, redesigned head restraints and such details as energy-absorbing mounting of the inner seat springs, all to help reduce the incidence of whiplash. The Legacy has received the highest crash test rating from Euro NCAP (5 star).
Every new Subaru now comes with Subaru ETCo as standard, our class-leading, ground-breaking Aftercare programme worth over £7,000.
