MORE SPACE, MORE PRACTICALITY

THE OUTBACK GIVES YOU GREATER TREK FLEXIBILITY

The Subaru Outback is ready for your life and ready right now to tackle the broadest range of motoring challenges. Whether your lifestyle takes you to outlying outposts, by whichever route you choose, or demands that you deal with a mix of urban and country sprawl, it is the ultimate, go-anywhere family estate car.

The clever multi-purpose design of its spacious cabin offers more than enough room for family, friends and their belongings, whether shopping or holidaying.

As much ’at home’ in the Grampians or the Alps as it is in the Capital’s conurbations or local County spread, its compact double wishbone rear suspension creates a vast boot area, without reducing the Outback’s abilities to manage both bulky loads and bendy roads with unabashed talent.

VERSATILITY WITH SECURITY

Inside the Outback, the maximum amount of space is packaged ingeniously, so that you can alter the seating and storage configuration both effortlessly and practically. Its 60/40-split, ’one touch’ folding rear seats allow you to transport passengers and large items as you require, thereby reducing the compromises normally inherent to an estate car.

When you need the extra room, single finger-levers in the luggage area fold down the rear seats simply and effortlessly.

The Outback’s retractable luggage cover helps to keep personal belongings out of view and away from sunlight. With a lightweight, yet sturdy aluminium construction, the cover can be removed readily to make way for bulkier items, according to your immediate needs.

SUBARU DYNAMIC CHASSIS CONTROL CONCEPT (DC3)

Innovative Subaru engineering balances the tenets of handling precision, occupant protection and driving passion. The Subaru Dynamic Chassis Control Concept (DC3) extends the benefits of the car’s low centre of gravity and AWD stability to match every aspect of the Outback’s performance envelope.

Outback elevates the inherent advantages of its signature Subaru layout – balance, composure and response – with Subaru DC3. The body construction uses more high-tensile steel in critical areas to achieve immense strength allied to lower weight penalties. Its inherent handling balance is more surefooted and stable, while the ride quality remains more comfortably compliant and supple.

 Symmetrical AWD

AWDAt Subaru, when we design cars, we have always taken a different and, some would say, a more thoughtful approach. We believe that symmetry provides natural balance and that balance gives the driver greater control. That is why Subaru has spent more than four decades developing its Symmetrical AWD system. Mounted in-line with the Subaru Boxer, flat-configured engine, for the ideal symmetrical layout, it maximises power delivery with unbeatable traction. It is a tried and trusted means of delivering inherent balance, inspiring agility and safe stability for total control regardless of conditions. Consummately confident and flattering, it offers innate, yet involving balance to make every drive the best drive of your life.

Dynamic Performance

Exceptional traction ensures that any application of power feels instantaneous and involving for the driver. The sensitive balance arising from the car’s symmetrical layout helps the Outback deliver responsive and reactive handling strengths, because it's less likely to become unstable while negotiating bends, however energetic the approach, and it delivers an unique and engaging level of control at all times.

Agility in an emergency

In adverse weather conditions, or in the crucial split-seconds it takes to react to an unexpected situation, the symmetrical drivetrain, with its ingenious side-to-side power dissemination, provides the necessary stability, involving agility and unbeatable traction to help the driver to steer around danger.

Suspension

Constant Contact

The more that the car’s tyres are connected to the road, the greater the amount of control imparted to the driver. Power is routed to all four tyres at all times, in order to maintain the strongest links to the road or track surfaces as possible, in the process maximising both handling and control precision.

Constant Safety

Whether it's been a rough-road journey or the daily commute, you can rest assured that your Outback is constantly vigilant and adapting to ensure that both you and your occupants, with their belongings, are delivered as safely and securely to their destinations as possible.

Suspension

Front Suspension

Working in harmony with Subaru DC3, the Outback’s strut-type front suspension features a highly rigid Cradle Mount System, a wide footprint and even greater wheel travel. Combined, these technical elements deliver flatter, more stable and agile cornering, as well as a quieter, more resilient and comfortable ride quality, over a wide selection of on and off-road surfaces.

Rear Suspension

Expressly balancing sporty handling with refinement, the Outback’s double wishbone rear suspension is the perfect partner to Subaru’s inherent chassis control, which helps it to handle either rough roads or sharp corners with equal poise and precision. To minimise noise and vibration in the cabin, all suspension links and the rear differential are rubber-isolated from their rigid subframe, which is further insulated from the body by greater density rubber mounts. The dampers include a self-levelling facility to maintain an even ride height, most notably when heavier or bulkier loads are being carried.

THE SUBARU BOXER ENGINE

Unlike some other car manufacturers, Subaru prefers to match its engine power to its inherent balance. Few other cars can progress with the self-assured confidence of an Outback, so you won't be surprised by how uniquely it is accomplished. The horizontally-opposed cylinder configuration of the Subaru Boxer engine places the pistons 180 degrees apart, for a lower, flatter profile than the engine types often referred to as ‘conventional‘. This gives the engine and the overall vehicle, a lower centre of gravity and a better sense of balance than almost any of its rivals. In addition, the pistons’ opposing movements counteract each other inherently, a technical consideration that cancels out vibrational forces and enhances refinement levels.

Roadholding

BETTER BALANCE

Because the engine block and its location enables a flatter profile and sits lower in the Outback’s chassis, the car’s overall stance is more stable, blessed with greater balance and is more resistant to body roll than many other designs. It is no error of judgement and Subaru owners know that the overriding appeal is significant.

SMOOTH POWER

Throughout the rev-range the Boxer engine delivers immediate, responsive power smoothly, in a refined manner and without effort. The pistons lie flat and work against each other to reduce vibrations, aspects that make the ride as smooth and comfortable as it is exciting and engaging for the driver. The long-term benefits are myriad but include reduced strain and stress on car, driver and passengers, factors that enhance overall safety.

DURABLE DRIVEABILITY

The engine’s ‘flat’ configuration is inherently rigid and self-balancing, while generating less vibration than 'V-type' or 'in-line' piston engines, for greater durability and more dependable performance.

AWD MEANS ALL FOUR WHEELS ARE ALWAYS FULLY ENGAGED

VEHICLE DYNAMICS CONTROL SYSTEM

Standard in every Subaru Outback, Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) monitors and analyses the vehicle’s intended driven course through an array of sensors. If the vehicle approaches the limits of stability, the AWD torque distribution, engine output and brakes at each wheel are adjusted to assist in keeping the vehicle on course.

MORE STABLE MANOEUVRES

In a corner, or while making an evasive manoeuvre, Vehicle Dynamics Control compares the driver's intentions with the vehicle's actual movements, based on both steering and braking, as well as the lateral acceleration and yaw (rotational forces) inherent at the time. The system then adjusts engine output and braking of individual wheels, as needed, to assist in keeping the car close to its intended original course.

Safety Features

COLLISION AVOIDANCE

Many of the same features that make Outback so rewarding to drive, also contribute to keeping its occupants out of harm’s way. The stable, responsive handling of its permanent Symmetrical AWD assures maximum control in any weather conditions. The Subaru Boxer engine enhances this security, thanks to its lower centre of gravity, by creating an even closer connection between the car and the road. Its standard Vehicle Dynamics Control and generously sized brakes endow it with athletically responsive reflexes. The added precision afforded by a Cradle Mount System for its front suspension and steering geometry, also equips the driver in readiness for more reactive evasive capabilities. This is all because Subaru believes that the best way to survive a collision is not to have one in the first place.

PASSIVE SAFETY

At Subaru, there has never been an end to the pursuit of safety. The company sets high standards, enhancing features constantly, while earning world-wide acclaim for its successes. Yet, even with the most advanced active safety systems, sometimes an incident is simply unavoidable. That's why the Outback is designed to protect its occupants with a series of advanced systems and features, balancing inherent structural rigidity, with controlled deformation in key areas, to better manage impact forces. The Cradle Mount System for its engine effectively lengthens the front crumple zone. Each side door incorporates two side-impact protection beams. A comprehensive suite of airbags, whiplash-reducing front seats, retracting pedals and 3-point seatbelts help protect occupants directly. It’s a core value of the Subaru philosophy that peace of mind is the first step in providing driving enjoyment.

BRAKING SYSTEM

The standard 4-wheel disc brakes feature lightweight aluminium rear callipers and a strong, reassuring response at the brake pedal. The Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) includes Electronic Brake-force Distribution, that reapportions front to rear braking pressure, regardless of how the vehicle is loaded. Brake Assist provides greater force in sudden, emergency braking, even if the driver neither brakes hard nor soon enough. Subaru’s Hill Holder Assist helps prevent rollback when starting off on a 5% or steeper gradient, by applying the electronic parking brake and releasing it again automatically, once you're underway.

RING-SHAPED REINFORCEMENT FRAMES

The Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frames strengthen the passenger compartment from the roof to the doors, pillars and floor. This first-class design helps to divert and dissipate impact energy away from the occupants in the event of a collision. The front crumple zone is integral to the frame, while the cradle mounting for the engine and front suspension is designed to keep those components further from the passenger compartment in the event of a frontal impact.

SEATS, SEATBELTS AND AIRBAGS

Standard on the Outback are front SRS airbags, plus front-side and curtain SRS airbags. Height-adjustable front seat belts feature pretensioners to hold occupants securely in place, while load limiters ease the peak forces to the chest. In a rear collision, the front seats use new, more rigid frames, redesigned head restraints and such details as energy-absorbing mounting of the inner seat springs, all to help reduce the incidence of whiplash. The Outback has received the highest crash test rating from Euro NCAP.
