To celebrate National Walk Your Dog Day, Subaru UK has launched a unique new initiative designed with four-legged family members in mind: ‘Test Drive with Dogs’.
The campaign invites customers to bring their dogs along when test driving a Subaru, helping owners make more informed decisions when choosing a car that suits both their lifestyle and their pet’s needs.
Putting Dogs at the Heart of Car Buying Decisions
A new national survey commissioned by Subaru UK revealed that while 80% of dog owners say their pet influences their car-buying decision, only 20% have actually test driven a vehicle with their dog before purchasing.
‘Test Drive with Dogs’ aims to close that gap.
Throughout the campaign, Subaru’s dog-friendly retailers across the UK will welcome both human and canine guests to experience the latest model range together. From assessing boot space and comfort to trying out genuine accessories, owners can ensure their chosen vehicle works just as well for their dog as it does for them.
Subaru’s ‘safe, tough and fun’ line-up has long been popular with dog owners who value practicality, durability and go-anywhere confidence. Models available to test include the versatile Subaru Outback, the capable Subaru Forester, and the compact and adventure-ready Subaru Crosstrek.
Raising Awareness of Dog Travel Safety
While the initiative is fun, it also carries an important safety message.
Subaru UK’s survey uncovered a concerning knowledge gap when it comes to transporting dogs legally and safely:
-
1 in 5 dog owners are currently breaking the law by failing to properly secure their pet in the vehicle.
-
Failure to secure a dog can result in fines of up to £5,000 and may invalidate car insurance — yet a third of respondents were unaware of the insurance implications.
-
A third did not know crash-tested dog harnesses (which clip into a seat belt buckle) are available.
-
A similar proportion were unaware that best practice is to secure dogs in a crate or behind a guard in the boot of an estate or SUV.
-
Worryingly, half of those surveyed did not know it is a legal requirement to deactivate airbags when a dog travels in the front seat, potentially putting pets at serious risk.
Through ‘Test Drive with Dogs’, Subaru retailers will offer practical advice on safe pet transport, a refresher on the relevant areas of the highway code, and demonstrations of appropriate accessories — all in a relaxed, welcoming environment (with dog treats included).
Experience the Range — With Your Dog On Board
All participating vehicles will be equipped with suitable safety accessories, including dog guards and harness solutions, so owners can see first-hand how their dog fits and travels in the vehicle.
Customers will even be encouraged to stop off for a walk during their test drive — because what better way to celebrate National Walk Your Dog Day?
Lorraine Bishton, Managing Director of Subaru UK, explains:
“Through ‘Test Drive with Dogs’, we’re inviting customers to visit our friendly, dog-loving retailers and experience Subaru’s model range with a four-legged friend in tow. We want to empower people to make more informed car-buying decisions — finding a vehicle that works for them and their pet.
At the same time, we’re shining a spotlight on the critical issue of dog transport safety. Our survey shows that more education is needed to ensure owners comply with the law and keep their pets safe on the road. We’re determined to play our part in raising awareness in an area we’re truly passionate about.”
